I HATE shopping when I have no dollars. It's more depressing than not having dollars in the first place. Ugh. Went to the mall two nights ago with my Mum and sis. Went into ONE STORE (literally, Athlete's World, and that was it) and I could have easily spent upwards of $200!

I have been so good tho. Since Jan 1st I have only bought three thongs from La Senza and 2 cds!!! (and obviously gas, cellie bill, and a few events & dinners - Matt usually takes me out/treats me). I am doing soo soo good for not shoping right now! I believe I can resume my shopping sprees come the end of March :)

^hahaha same here!! I have just enough restraint to not get one. Otherwise it would be teh fast train to debtville. I saw a top I wanted sooo bad. But I just couldn't justify spending 180.00 on one top. But it was soooo nice!!! GAH!!!!!!!!

People who shop with no money drive me crazy.

We have customer counters, people! We get in trouble if we don't "convert" enough customers! :( I think everyone should have to work retail for a couple of weeks to understand how much it SUCKS when you totally service a customer to the best of your ability only to have them try on stuff that looks FABULOUS and not have any intention to purchase any of it :(

what drives ME crazy is the sales people who think that I should buy stuff that I try on because their sales numbers are down...I worked in retail for five years and I never had a problem with customers that didn't have money and just wanted to try stuff on. U just give it u'r best and remember that YOU work for the CUSTOMER..as long as they leave satisfied and impressed they'll come back and they'll come to you for the sale:)But I definatly know when they're fishing for numbers and they don't like me to have fun so I purposely don't buy anything. Oh yeah...and I never pay the extra taxes....EVER;P

sorry, but that sounds like exactly the reason people don't like salespersons.

"oh you're in the store and tried something on? therefore you are now obligated to buy something"

besides, if you're helpful people tend to remember that and will comeback if they really want it. should these shoppers be ashamed that they might think about their purchases as opposed to being an impulse buyer?

Not paying the PST will really suck for you if the government decides to audit you!

My store is NOT commissioned, however, like EVERY other retail store we do have sales goals to meet. I'm glad that you think that people will come back for the sale if they like the items, but the reality is that only about 15% of holds actually get picked up.

Hot Karl, my problem is absolutely not with people who try items on and don't find anything that they like, is appropriate, etc., rather it's with those people who go "shopping" with no money and no intention to purchase anything at all. Honestly, it's a waste of the sales associates' time, and it's a waste of my time as a manager trying to come up with ways to increase sales, conversion and upt when a good 25% of my customers are 13-17 year old kids with no money! I guess you'd have to be in retail management to understand.

i wave my hand in front of the scanning counter thingy so that it looks like twenty people entered instead of one.

no customer is a waste of time. The 15% that come back is more than nothing...and those are sales from people shopping with no money. I've owned my own store and you know what? The owners of these CHAINS just bust your balls to make you work harder. The 13-17 year old kids will more than likely have enough money in years to come if you allow them to get to know you're product. The first thing you learn is your target market. The 13-17 year old kids might not be the target market in the fashion industry but if there's 25% of them that come in you should acknowledge that in 5 years they're going to be it. Those kids are the future of the store and any owner would be wishing he had a better manager that understood marketing sales managment rather than actually worrying about the customer/sales conversions.

you must really be into your job to care about the return customers 5 years ahead.
i hate sales people cause they sell you what the company tells them to sell, not what you want ot need, or even whats the best product for you. its all about gross margin and stock levels. at future shop anyway, but i doubt its much differnt else where.

im pritty bad about spending money, i almost always spend money when i leave the house. but thats why i leave funds that are spoken for at home :P

some of you may find it interesting that prior to the Great Exhibition of 1851, stepping into a store was an unstated obligation to purchase something. goods didn't bear price tags and haggling was the norm. fascinating, i know.
