sweet, $50 under my budget

Go for an iriver IGP-100. 1.5 GB. iPod doesn't support OGG or WMA files. All my files are in OGG format, which could be 3 times less than the regular mp3 file without any real quality loss a human ear can pick up. So 1.5 makes it stuff worth about 5 GB. Got mine off eBay 100 bones flat. Nice and small, firmware upgradeble and a large screen. iPod??? May be not...

unless you have the original source files handy re-encoding mp3->ogg introduces 2x the noise/artifacts from both formats.
