Stanley Kubrick

man, the last week i've been totally gobbling up Kubrick films. i rented and watched:
Eyes Wide Shut
Full Metal Jacket
2001: A Space Odyssey

and i just rented, but haven't watched yet:
Barry Lyndon

i'd already seen:
The Shining
Dr. Strangelove
A Clockwork Orange

this guy has to be one of the best movie directors/writers of all time. i'm sad he's dead :( anyone else a kubrick fan?

but out of all the films of his i've seen, A Clockwork Orange is the best.

I have a ton of respect for him, but he'll never be my favorite director. All the movies you've listed.. I can't slag them or anything, they're obviously unique works with a ton of Kubrik's artistic vision behind them... but on a personal level, I wasn't as thrilled by ClockWork Orange or Full Metal Jacket as I expected to be. They were good but they don't rank on my top lists all time.

Which almost bothers me, in a way, because I have this weird feeling like they should have..

^ahhh right. i remember that scene. well, after watching so many Kubrick films asking 'are you from texas?' was a little too subtle a hint for me, i guess.

A substantial part of Kubrick's brilliance was his ability to manipulate his audience rather than simply entertain.

Kubrick is deffinetly my favorite director. His vision for breath-taking shot is unparalleled. I could (and have) put his movies on mute and just marvel at the his visual creations. He has been my fave for a while too. A Clockwork Orange is my fave movie all time.

Did any of you guys see A.I. (artificial intelligence)?

I heard Kubrick began working on it right before he died and never finished it. Apparently Steven Speilberg finished it. The funny thing is I harsh noticed the begining was very Kubrick-esque, dark, errie, with a sense of urgency and all that but the end was typical hollywood shit. hahah it seemed like you could see the division of the two directors as the movie progressed.

I love in Space Odyssey, how the characters say telephone instead of phone. "Tell your mother I'll telephone her later this week." Silly Kubrick, nobody uses telephone as a verb...

i might be mistaken on this one, but i'm pretty sure Kubrick left detailed instructions on how he wanted the movie to be made and Speilburg just followed his instructions. i can't remember where i heard this, but i thought that's what happened.

although the ending isn't really my favourite thing...it does seem like something kubrick would do. he has a tendancy to get kind of kooky near the end of his movies. most of his movies have a very distinctive 3 Act forumla...and AI wasn't really much different from that. think of the ending to Space Odyssey or the last part of Eyes Wide Shut...it wouldn't surprise me at all if the ending of AI was Kubrick's imagination.

Well that movie 2001 was made in the 1960's and he was trying to make the people talk a lttle differently etc - after all it was to be in the future and we know that people talk a little differently as the decades pass.
