Is the Livestrong bracelet trend a bad thing?
A friend and I were just talking about this. She said it made her sick how this bracelet has turned into a fashion trend, and how people have kinda jumped the wagon. I told her that it really doesn't matter, the bottom line is, the bracelets are selling like crazy and the foundation is making a LOT of money.
I'm sure most people who have one bought it for a better reason than just being trendy. And I'm sure most people who have one will continue wearing theirs even after it's "not cool" anymore. Last edited by acidic_liquid; Mar 30, 05 at 02:03 AM. |

To be honest I didn't know these things existed until I read this post.
I think it's awesome to see consumerism benefitting a good cause. There are a whole lotta sheep out there looking for the next thing to flock to, but that doesn't mean that whatever they find loses any real value. |

i definatey think it works both ways. i finally got my hand on a junior size one (YAY FOR SMALL WRISTS).. it looks kinda cool, and supports a wonderful cause. they have blue ones right now at 7-11 and all proceeds go to the tsunami tradegy. baller bands are just kinda neat in general.
(akeel if ure reading this..ures in the coolest though) |

^^just a plastic bracelete (giant rubberband) kind of thing...and it says livestrong on it. theyre like $1 american... and the proceeds goes to the lance armstrong foundation for cancer research. if they're super expensive then it would be more of a trend thing.. they're only a dollar and its to such a good cause and SUCH a smart fundraising idea.

And it really does work well. I saw Ashlee's (?) and asked her what it was. Now I want to get one so someone can do the same to me. And so the word and support spreads. |

Yeah I see them EVERYWHERE at school, even around the city. It's neat because they don't even sell it here. I got mine through my friend when she went down to Seattle.
I heard there are some people trying to sell fake ones online. That's pretty damn pathetic. Plus I see companies trying to make a profit from them online. Bleh! |

i don't know if they were in highschool, more than likely though.
this was at the food court at metro... edit: i'd rather give a donation, and know that i did, rather than have to get a material item to show others that i did. if im gonna give money to something, i shouldn't need to get anything more than a sincere thanks in return. Cancer research is in the research not the cure, there are plenty of people that stand to gain in not disclosing the information of alternative cures as far as cancer research is concerned.
The real research people should be funding is of those that have come up with successful alternative cures (like the Hoxsey treatment, known to have a documented average 80% success rate, more info: http://www.healthy.net/scr/article.asp?ID=2010 ). Or you could be an unwitting dupe and think that companies like Nike are doing good causes all while running sweatshops. So in short, yes, the livestrong bracelet trend is a bad thing. It makes people into passive consumers that think they are being moral or supporting a moral cause, when they are really just filling the pockets of some real cut-throat corporate entities and such. |

I really doubt the people I've seen wearing them are doing so because they want to wear something that shows they've done good for the world. It's fashion first, in this case. |

K....theres also the tsunamie brceletes too...
i see tons of down town people wearing them... in huge blue rubber and then theres this other yellow one....but i don't know wut that it for... oh u can get yer tsunamie bracelets at 7-11 ~dalyn |

i don't think they are a bad thing. everyone and their dog was wearing them last year in the states. im surprised it took so long to become popular here. my aunt from boston sent my mom and i livestrong ones and another aunt sent us pink breast cancer ones. my dad felt left out so he bought red sox nation ones off ebay.
i think if people understand what they are wearing them for..then its all good. |

My question is this: Do even half the people sporting the bracelet really know what it is they're supporting or are they just giving in to the next 'trend'?
It's great that money is being raised for a good cause but to have a bunch of people out there who are just as uneducated as they were before they put on the bracelet seems kind of lame. |

I think it has become a trend. People wear them just because everyone else is. I can give my younger sister as an example to that.... All the people that are wearing them I hope it crosses their minds that those braclets are supposed to represent someone you know who has had cancer or who still does. sure they look cool and all but I really hope ppl know the real reson behind them, and dont just buy them as a fashion statement or trend.

Does it matter? Regardless of wether or not they know, the money still goes to the cause right? |

I'm not saying that the money aspect is unappreciated by any means. That money is needed there is no denying that. I just find it lame that people give in to the trend not knowing what they're supporting. |

well what these are are really "baller bands".. its a basketball thing. i remember in highschool the tough trainers would wear an elastic band on their wrist and when ure practicing lets say free throws and u miss, you snap yourself with it. sounds lame, but its totally a mental "must do better" thing. nike pumped these baller bands out..i think started off with the lebron james edition, and then the livestrong ones came out, and now they're available in every color. and they dont really "snap" well either. i think they're court friendly too.. which means u dont have to take off while playing a sport.
sigh.. miss sports. |

My point is, they're not pretending to support it, they ARE still supporting it. A lot of people donate to charities through purchasing certain products or dropping off their extra change in a bin without truly understanding what they're donating to. What I am getting at is that the organization still gets $$$ |

Great, they're getting the money. Good for them. I most definitely don't think that is a bad thing.
I'm not going to argue with you about it. I personally just think that it's not cool that the whole idea of supporting cancer has been changed from a truly charitable act to nothing more than a fashion statement. |
