that would be the one i'm reading right now: Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk

not the whole book makes me sick, but just the first story called 'guts'. so disturbingly gross. but also really funny and well written.

mists of avalon? - never proven to not be historicaly correct....
heart of darkness - baised in history, but to metiforical to be to acturate
cezar ?? - i know nothing about this one, but it seems tempting
Microsoft and the holocaust - totaly true, shocking, and great for fueling anti-bush aguments. exposing lies from history to present.

Marilyn Manson's The Long Hard Road out of Hell - well he's pritty much history, and his book is mostly fiction, so it fits... (but an amazing book, read it a couple times)

what crookedking should we all stare at the zombie box insted. ..... though Sidekick mabey you should get out more? lol... jk
i personaly think its awsome to see that many people are still reading despite the way things are going with TV and everything else. especaily happy to see people recomending/reading classics, historical, or educational material.

Funny.

The books Crookedking is trying his darnedest not to mention is anything by Bernard Cornwell, a historical fictionist. I've read the Warlord Chronicals, his telling of Arthurian Legend as if it took place around 5th Century A.D. in the southwestern corner of Great Britain (what is commonly known as Wales today). Very interesting stuff to watch the clashes of the Britons with the Saxons, each other, and the interesting mix of religions. Highly recommend.

He also wrote the Sharpe series, many of which have been televised in a few miniseries which are on History from time to time, starring Sean Bean (Boromir from Lord of the Rings. I laughed heartily when he pricked his finger on the shards of Narsil and said "...still sharp [sic].")

Bernard Cornwell, above all, is a masturful writer. You will get completely ingrained into his characters and his politics. Definately some good shit.

you forgot about his other books!!!!!

there's the american civil war series where a yankee fights for the south. then there's also his hundred years war series where the hero gets tortured by the inquisition. bastards. then there's also a new one that takes place in england when the danes were invading...second book isn't out yet, but it promises to be as good as all his other books. then there was another one where an english soldier becomes a PI.

i cracked :( ...but i got one right?

it's kind of hard to explain since it deals a lot with philosophy and i would never be able to say it as good as pirsig. but it has a lot to do with the issue of determining quality and also the difference (and similarities) between the scientific and romantic way of thinking and analyzing things. it was written in the 70's so there's lots of hippy thinking stuff. plus, there's the whole storyline of the guy and his son going on a trip across country in their motorcycle.

yeah, i know how that feels. i have a compulsion to buy more books than i can possibly read, so my bookshelf is filled with books on a never ending 'to read' list.

hahaha,

how did I know that Dave was gonna mention Stranger in a Strange Land?
By far one of my favorite books :P
I'm surprised he wasn't the one who mentioned Zen and the Art...

I loved Oryx and Crake too... Reminds me to read it again..

One of my favorite authors recently is Haruki Murakami, just cause he's just got this zany way of creating imagery and extracting the mundane things about human nature and making it compelling and topsy turvy.
Writes kinda like Vonnegut sometimes.

I suggest Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. If you're looking for a read that is easy to sit with and feel out, read Norwegian Wood. It's more like a novel...

I'm currently reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, so far so good...

Recently read the Red Tent by diamant and if you don't mind the estrogen driven storyline, it's an alright read. Kinda fades off at the end though..

Black Dogs by Ian McEwan

My next read...

Man, it's nice to have time to pick up the books (for fun) again...
Good luck with your book hunting!
