Cast Iron, Teflon, or Stainless Steel

Place your votes, add your comments and so on.

Personally I can't stand anything but cast iron in the Kitchen although I do have a large stainless steel (1 gallon) pot for cooking pasta, soups and such. For frying and making sauces though I just need it to be cast iron. Reasons being are as follows; they provide even heat to the pan, are easy to clean, last for ever (close to anyway), and do not flake off in your food like teflon.

I tend to agree with you. Although I worked in a Kitchen that did copious amounts of Breakfasts and when you're flipping Eggs like a Madman, the Teflon makes things so much easier. But for everything else the Cast Iron is always a winner.

I could see if you were in a hurry that would be a big help. Teflon can cook eggs fast without sticking. If you have the time though cast iron can slow cook omlettes without sticking like no one's business. Add to that the fact you can put cast iron in the oven under the broiler to make your omlette rise very nicely.

i prefer cast iron, stainless steel. i like my cooking instruments to hold heat well.

once you've cooked something like flavoured oils in teflon, it's game over.

Fuck Eggs. OK?!

lol I hated it... cooking Eggs all over the place yet I despise them and haven't eaten one in Egg form in 20+ years now.

Yeah, Teflon made our Kitchen run a bit faster.

CAST IRON

I have the most amazing huuuuuge cast iron pot that I use for slow-cooking pasta sauces. BEAUTIFUL.

Gotta have stainless steel mixing bowls, though.

Cast iron all the way! I don't have much in the way of cast iron, but it's really good esp. for vegetarians like me because the iron transfers onto the foods you cook in it. I also like how when cast iron heats up, there's a much more even distribution of heat.

most of what we have here is tefflon (for easy cleaning!) and stainless steel. I really really hate how it's such a bitch to clean off stainless steel.

I cant stand cookin with anything but cast iron. Anyone who uses cast iron understands.
Teflon pans are kinda handy while they last, because of the no stick factor. But i cringe at the thought of munchin on "teflon flakes" b/c no one at my house can remember not to use metal utensils on the teflon surfaces. so they get all scratched up and pretty much unuseable, grrr!

cast iron all the way baby!

All I want to know is who the hell voted for teflon? I'm guessing they would be the same person that was pissed I didn't add a microwave option.

Ya know,... I've had this conversation only once, before, but it didn't really go anywhere.

I've never cooked w/ cast iron, before. Never had any at hand to use.

I agree with all that's been said for teflon. Personally, I don't fancy it.

Most of my gear is stainless steel.

Since I love to cook, I'm now really intrigued, and want to try cooking a couple of dishes w/ cast iron, just to see the difference for myself.

Since I've mostly used stainless steel, I've found the biggest differences in cooking is the heat source, itself. I far prefer gas stoves to electric. If the reasons are not obvious to you, then you've not experienced both.

I have stainless steel and teflon. But have been planning on getting some new stuff once I move and was already thinking of going cast iron. Used to have a nice ol' cast iron pan but it disappeared..
Where can I get some decent cast iron for not too pricey? :)

PS- Am currently cooking with a gas stove and I love it! So much faster and cooks it more evenly. mmmm

Check out thrift stores, cast iron lasts basically forever and I've had luck getting pans for $5 or whatever.
