im fine with quitting cold turkey, but as soon as i see someone i know smoking or someone talks about it, i give in.

i think i have to just be a loner for a few weeks until all the urges are gone.

one of the first steps as mentioned is you gotta want to quit, feel it in your soul, know that that's a true desire in you (mind over matter steez)

second is set a date for when you will stop smoking
after you set that date, dont worry about a thing - smoke as much as you want, as often as you want, as freely as you want to
then when the date comes, quit straight up, cold turkey

i got that advice from a letter a former smoker had sent in, tried it and it worked for me

set the date, smoked whenever i felt like it (actually smoked more than usual), the day before i quit, i had 16 cigs left, and i didnt want to waste money
so i smoked all of them - went out every hour to smoke, was taking too long so i started smoking two at a time (overload)
so i switched from two at the same time to double fisting alternating breathes (aka drags)
after staying up all night to finish the smokes (smoked the last one at 830am - i felt super nasty) went inside and fell asleep and havent touch one since - i think that was 4-5 years ago now?

but be warned, and this is where you may falter - you'll be tested, trust me
i found that i moved from one addiction to another - yep all associated with smoking
first addiction was a need to go have a drink - anywhere with anyone, drinking every day if i could
mentally put a stop to that, and the addiction moved to coffee - having to drink up to 3 cups a day (only had 3 per week beforehand)
then binge-ing on sweets (i think slurpees was part of that) and then something else
after that, i went through my 5th vice and once that was over
i no longer had a desire to smoke (took about 3 months to cycle throw those vices)
i would occassionly go out with friends to hangout in 2nd hand smoke during those 3 months after the quit date, but got over that as well

- so long story short, have a true desire to quit, set a date and smoke as much as you want til that date, know that you will go through your own vices but once you go through them all smoke free, you will no longer desire a drage again so be prepared and face those challenges head on
(ps. that was my second attempt at quitting and it was successful - first time was gradual, second time was cold turkey)

yeah i'd have to say the only thing i've ever found to work have already been mentioned, but the way i did it last time(the only time i ever ACTUALLY quit for more than a month, the first day i smoked 26 joints to my head.

anytime i wanted a smoke i'd light a joint, if i still wanted a smoke i'd light an after sess. joint, eventually you just can't smoke any more, though through the week i find the best thing is chug a cup or two of water whe you get a craving.

but you have to take the obvious ones into account, don't hang out with smokers and don't cave.

a coworker of mine followed this book that basically reiterated that the withdrawals from nicotine aren't actually as traumatic on the body as people make it out to be when they are quitting, it's all about putting mind over matter..if you want to quit, just do it when you feel ready to and don't make a huge fuss over it. It worked so well for her that nobody actually knew she quit until like weeks later.

Yea i mean i wasnt all that moody when i quit, i mean id want to smoke but i just wouldnt allow it. It wasnt as hard as i was expecting it to be, I think alot has to do with how much you feel you need/want to quit.
You can try all the tricks but i mean cold turkey wasnt as bad as i thought, id tried the patch a year befor and had no luck.
The real way to quit is to want to and feel you need to like 100% or else you wont have the drive.

I quit for 8 months, then started again. Wait sorry i TOOK A BREAK for 8 months. But anyways, a month after starting again, i got bronchitis, then i quit for a couple weeks, was healthy, smoked over the weekend, now i have strep thoat, dammit! I think that constantly getting sick is maybe the best way to quit, because I have NO desire to ever have another goddamn ciggy, i fucking hate being sick~!

dood, totally! Well I think that has a bit to do with it.

It just got to me; having the smell of smoke on your hands; hanging with friends that don't smoke and them being like "ewww" and having to go smoke alone.
I stopped smoking about 5 weeks ago.
But yea more like stopping then quiting. Quiting is a harsh word. I mean if I smoke a cigg again its not the end of the world.
It just isnt in my routine anymore.

It is easier to start the "stopping smoking process" when you are sick; I found anyways.

I quit a few weeks ago..

to stop immediately:

eat a cigarette ( minus the filter )

otherwise, remember each time you feel tempted or someone offers you one, turn it down, just one more time. You keep getting better and better at it each time.

the best advice is i can give is move away from everyone that you know (non-smokers included), and quit once you leave. keep in contact with people only through other means of communication other than physical presence. not saying it will be easy, but it will definatly work. worked for me, and i'm pretty sure it will work for you ashley.

I don't smoke, but my old colleague did and one of the things that kept her motivated in trying to quit smoking was to set up a rewards system for herself:

She saved up and put aside all the money that she WOULD have spent on smokes and put it towards a "piggy bank" for future use. She decided that she would reward herself with all the money that she saved from NOT smoking. I think she had a specific target in mind, like a specific reward.

It's kind of good way to help you realize how much you actually end up spending on intentionally damaging your health.

Good luck!

has anyone every tried ibogaine treatments?

ive been reading into the use of ibogaine for people addicted to pretty much anything, and it sounds like an amazing discovery.

there is even a iboga therapy clinic in vancouver !

http://www.ibogatherapyhouse.net/cms/

i encourage people to read up on this amazing tool for recovery and addiction, because this has helped many people, from quitting smoking, drinking, to quitting Meth and heroin.

here are a couple more links if your interested.

one trick that has worked well for a bunch of people I know is,

Whenever you have a craving, drink water. A whole glass, not only will this flush out your system, but you will be too bloated to care about having a cigerette.

I've quit several times with this method, however I like smoking too much :(

easiest way to quit smoking, substitue it with another habit...pop, gum, chew, chocolate(chocolate works), etc...

just don't smoke and have no problem, only the weak can not quit
