b) Yes, I'd hate Toronto. It's an industrial/cultural wasteland. I don't hate people with more money than me because they have more money than me. I hate them because they get to destroy the environment and make money off it. No biggy, though. The earth has killed off it's entire population and rebooted before. It's not going anywhere. We sure as hell are. Enjoy extinction. Your money won't save you. Ta.

Blow me. Your mother didn't finish me off.
a) Gotcha.. sometimes I get confused with all this craziness flying everywhere.

b) Not surprised at all. I never said anything about you hating them because they have more than you. Just obeserving that you for some reason harbour a lot of hate towards more affluent individuals. As for extinction... I will enjoy it, even better is the fact that you're all coming with me! Being an Activist won't save you either. ;)

Pretty much. That's why I'm more of a pessimist than an activist. I think it's already too late, and David Suzuki is starting to agree.

Did you know Bill Gates has given 58% of his wealth to charity?

i met david suzuki once and he's an arrogant son of a bitch.

lol, my mom went to one of his meetings once and most of the people who attended were from vancouver and the meeting was in langley. most of the people who went were driving SUV's and that's what the whole talk was about. dave says that we should all drive the kind of car that he does, but not all of us are given his type of car :(

edit-that's pretty cool about bill gates.

or you know , maybe it has the best mountain biking in the world ..

or one of the best snowboard parks in the world.

of course you wouldn't really know that, since you're too busy crying like a girl about everything.

stfu.

My fiance used to always use the highway to go to Whistler TO WORK, Not to be a rich cunt and throw it in your face, and he may have to again, he has no choice.
And what the hell is with you thinking only people who use the highway should have to pay for it, I mean i dont drive In Surrey or Langley or PoCo yet i dont bitch about them fixing those roads just because i dont drive there.

I could care less about who's going to whistler, when, and why, but you are incorrect about thinking a large percent of the bc population is able to go to whistler

Secondly "ghetto" is far more applicable than you think

If anything, whistler/blacomb are more an example of societal indifference to poor environmental management and more importantly the theft of aboriginal land as a signigificant component of how we have the resources for entertainment and recreation today.

Personally, until we can figure long lasting solutions to the "human condition" no one will be able to create and organize long enough for a substainable environment.

^You dont have to be a 'rich cunt' though. Yes it is more expensive then spending a day at home but thats what its like anywhere you go really. I never stated anyone could go there but you can be far away from being rich and still go to Whistler

The sad thing is we have a group of young intelligent people fighting over who should be paying for the roads?

The problems lie far deeper and more structural/governmental/business related than anything.

Maple Leaf - Your analysis of forrests needing to be logged is grossly simplified and is basically logging industry propaganda. Forests have their own natural cycle that does not need human interference. The FPC is a nearly irrelevant document that is neither enforced or followed.

Mangle - You are complaining about $$$$$$$$$$$ and how we are spending so much of it on Whistler getting a new highway. I'll bet you $100 that in the next 10 years Whistler will make a profit of be revenue neutral at worst with regards to tax collected and spent. Do you have any idea how much money is spent up there and then taxed???? Do you have any idea how many people derive direct and then secondary employment from Whistler?

I think as Fable mentioned this is really a pretty weak conversation. If anything to me this is the sort of World Wild Life fund sort of issue. The kind of thing where if there is a victory for the environment they all go and pat each other on the back and drive home in an SUV to their massive house in suburbia. Who fucking cares if we save ANWR or the Eagle Bluffs if we don't tackle global warming?

Do _YOU_ have any idea where that taxable money is coming from?

Canadians!

Any foreign tourist can get their paid taxes back, just by filling out an easily accessible form and submitting receipts. (Just head downstairs to the loo from the Longhorn and you'll see the sign on the landing, half-way down)

Granted, a small percentage will go unclaimed because the tourists are unimformed or just can't be bothered.

It's still "us Canadians" that are paying taxes for everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frosty
(wonders why simplicity is so hard)

Yes the GST is refundable but as far as i know the PST is not. Regardless of that though the income tax, property tax, and business tax is NOT refundable. Don't kid yourself, we do not do this shit for free. Many Canadians visit Whistler but at the end of the day foreign tourists are a large part of the monetary input to that system. Whistler is not a financial burden as people might want to think.

If I am so far off base than there should be easily available information to contradict my dissertation. With all the people crying about the Olympics surely somebody must have done a cost/benefit analysis? Show me the numbers.

Again Whistler is a cash cow, that the rest of the province gets to enjoy.

Tolls are reimbursable by employers, just like paying for parking. The main thing here is if money is the main obstacle for building this road to be environmentally safe, toll the gawd damn thing. Money is not excuse for spreading more of our cancer.

I see where you're coming from but I still think your view is very short sighted. Shouldn't you be worried about larger much further reaching issues than a small stretch of urban forest? For local issues environmentally how about coming up with alternatives to the gateway project that will see a massive increase in our dependence on freeways and of course cars. Provincially how about finding ways to create more jobs and use less timber so that we can sustain our forestry industry in the long term. Globally the big one is of course global warming.

Are you in favor of Kyoto? Do you take any steps in your daily life to minimize your foot print on the Earth? Do you live in huge house in suburbia? Do you have a long commute to work?

None of this is a personal attack at you in any way, I'm just trying to expand the conversation a bit to what I see as a more relevant one.

To answer my own questions I do favor Kyoto, I think that the changes it is trying to make are needed. If we take a lead on them we are going to be positioning ourselves for the new economy. I try to minimize my foot print in the ways that I can but I do have limits. I drive a truck for work but it's a 4 banger, I live in a small apartment walking distance from most shopping that I need. I often do have a long commute to work because I do construction and have no control over where our next job site is.

Apperently David Suzuki charges some outrageous price to speak at an event. I heard it was something in the vicinity of 3500$ He may be smart as fuck, but as an environmental scientist/ecologist/whatever else he's accredited for, you'd think you have more integrity than that?

I know a girl who worked for him, and pretty much agreed on him being somewhat of a jackass.

Rich cunts taking the sea to sky?

Um, you also realize that highway is also largely used by people living in surrounding communities of Squamish, Pemberton and cities North of Whistler which as far as I know and I've seen are not completely saturated with rich cunts, quite the opposite actually. Are you that fucking dense? How do you think these people get to larger cities like Vancouver? Duuuuh.

Also, fuck anyone that thinks Whistler is a playground for the rich. Some of us save our money just to spend a day carving those hills and it's worth every fucking penny. I can't believe some self righteous people are fucking uptight enough to write off people who engage in outdoor recreational activity as 'rich cunts'. Are we better off sitting at home on our computers all the time and getting fat? Fuck off.

A) Totally in support of the now abandoned by Conservatives Kyoto Accord. The goal was 240 megatons and the Conservatives say the Liberal plan would have only saved 170...so they're gonna do nothing. Fucking wankers.
B) I buy organic when I can afford it, which is about half the time. I also donate $12 a month to Greenpeace and subscribe to Adbusters. I'm not as radical as I used to be. I was a vegetarian for about a month.
C) I live in a 3 bedroom main floor in East Van, with a one bedroom and two bedroom suite underneath.
D) I don't insure my car for city travel. I live two blocks from a Skytrain, so I only use public transportation.

I'm not David Suzuki by any stretch but I do my part.

How does the rest of Canada get to Vancouver? Are people from Barriere going to take the canyon in winter? No. Put a toll on the road. The toll would be placed for people going to and from Whistler. You do realize that Merritt doesn't have to pay a toll coming from Kamloops, right?
