the laser that reads cds/dvds

for a burner, the laser that reads the discs eventually wears out.
is this the same when ur just READING the discs like watching a movie?
is there a difference between home theater systems and ur everyday cd rom?

in comes my main question: the ps2.
does the laser for the ps2 act the same way as a regular home player or cd rom?
i hear that the laser eventually burns out when you play it too long.
so how does playing a burned ps2 game make it any worse? it's still a disc.

this is more of a thought than waiting for a response because i don't think there's too many people that know the answer to this...

the laser getting fucked up fom pirated games is hurt. i remember i went through 3 ps1's back in the day. and the first one i had was $600 too..gay

or if u played the same amount with regular games it would mess up too?

PS2 = Bad DVD player. You're just going to lose a lot of life out of your system by using it as one. It's not like cheapo players cost more than $60 these days anyways, though.

i dont think the laser will wear out with just reading.. i think it happens only with writing since the light needs to get amplified to the point where its actually changing the molecular structure of the cd (hence cd BURNING)

^good point, but I do belive lasers have gotten alot better through out the years, and will last longer

agreed... i also thought only the "burning" killed the laser.
and reading the dvd will not destroy it.
i currently do not play movies on my ps2 (kuz i think that's just retarded).
just play games.. hope it lasts a while ;D

Lasers are lights. A burner is merely a more concentrated light, but a light nonetheless. Saying that mere read use doesn't kill the laser is silly.

This is why people usually have two disc drives: One burner and one reader. I recommend highly that you go that path.

well the question was really to answer ps2 lasers. and sinc ei don't watch dvd movies with it. i'm safe. ;D

It _will_ run out eventually.

PS2s are the worst hardware-reliabilitywise of the three main consoles.

I wouldn't worry too much about it though.

Actually, Sony is among the better hardware production for DVD and CD players out there.

They just really missed the ball on the PS2s for some strange reason.

and never even thought about sony's when it came to audio.

It could be that the screw that controls the voltage of the laser has become slightly loosened... that happnened to Doom, 'twas quite the task to recaliberate it without the aid of a voltmeter.
