people who know me know that my life long dream is to become a famous photographer/film director. i've never done a course of art in high school and this year i decided to take Advanced Placement Art. it gives you first year university credits while still in high school. but the course is VERY labour intensive. and i knew that coming in. I'm a really hard worker and all...and i've managed to get As in every term so far. BUT...i don't handle criticism well. I'm handing in a General Portfolio for AP art...and my concentration is surreal fashion/figure photography. so i was making prints today in the dark room...and i managed to make a print i actually really liked (i tend to hate all the stuff i do). so i was really happy. and i went to go show it to my art teacher to ask if i should make it darker...increase the contrast...etc etc. so i went up to show her and she was just like "ohhhh...mmmm hmmm....yeeeeeeeah...i think you might have to have another photo shoot." and it totally knocked the wind out of me. and then i was like "ohhh...ok?" and then she was like "nice try though". i felt sick to my stomach. honestly. maybe i'm just wasting my time with this whole photography thing.
sorry i just had to vent.

i sorta know how u feel...
i suck at art and i know my pics suck too but there was this one pic i loved so much...it was of my fav spot around my neighborhood..and then my teacher saw it and was like blah...i know it mite be boring to people..but i luv it~!...but then again..thats the only pic i like..so i took the "plz redo ur picture...no contrast, no composition, bad texture...too grainy"...all that crap harshly...wutever..teachers think way too critically....as long as u like it...who cares wut others think...go for ur dream...there are a lotta people out there who will appreciate ur stuff!!..i mean, i saw ur pics of ur friend in the f+k fashion show section and i must say i loved them..ur awesome...i like ur style..so dif then everyone else~!:032: Last edited by ~lazee_grrl~; Apr 24, 01 at 05:36 PM.

awww. thanks. but i dunno...success in life is so oftenly defined by the way people perceive you or your work. As materialistic and cynical as that sounds. but it's true to a certain extent. all i know is that i wanna do something that involves art...i dunno if photography is my forte though

yuou just gotta take criticism.....but hey...one man's garbage is another man's treasure (not that im sayin your work is garbage of course).... my art teacher hated some of the stuff I did...but yet my friends loved it... so um yeah....... if you really have the gut feeling that it's great...you know it's great... :)

yeah. i just take criticism REALLY badly. i don't know. this guy from Parson's (an art school) came to look at my portfolio and he was like "Wow..." so i was like sooooo stoked and then the next day, some BITCh from another art school was like "what was your aim with thes pictures?? you didn't do the borders right with this picture" i was like "fuck you! who cares about the borders...stupid cunt" and she was like "unfortunaly...MY art school is not looking for YOUR type of work" i was like "k well you're fat"

Don't base your future on one person's opinion.....of couse her opinion counts, but it's one in a gazillion........ try asking her what she doesn't like about your work....maybe you will discover something.....i don't know what at this point, but maybe she can help you... maybe your abstract and she likes concrete or visa versa(sp??)....i dunno.... but i'm sure your pics are very purdy.....even if they ate dark(that is what u said, right?)......that just makes them more original....which is what really matters in the end........originality... i agree with mojo, one man's garbage is another man's treasure..... just because she doesn;t like it, doesn't mean a shitload of other people won't, because i'm sure they do:029: so , enough of my senseless rambling.....just don't give up....go for your dream and make it happen....i know it will cuz i have faith in you....... liza:023:

I just saw your pix in the fashion show thread and they're dope as hell!! You definitely have talent hun...take it from me...don't let her opinion get you off track of your dream. Keep at it, and when you're famous, go back and tell her that she knows shit about art. :029:

whatever. iit's going in my portfolio. she can fuck herself for all i care. my only question...bluey/green or black n white?

i dunno...with the blue, it kinda takes away from everything. maybe it's just me, but it seems way too dark. you can't really tell it's the same girl in all 3 poses. it just looks like 2 girls and then athena in the middle. i dunno. blah.

the blue one catches my eye.. but see, juss like others sed that "black and white one" catches their eye.. wut I'm tryin to say is (like every one has already sed) every one's got their own opinions:) so choose wutever feels rite to u .. so others can see ur work the way YOU want them to see it... and remember that not every one will be able to see it the way u want them to (like ur stupid art teacher)... and if they're gonna be stoopid narrowminded bitches.. wel.. pfft! go "shover paintbrushes up their ass" :)

the blue looks cool but it over does it a little... fuck em all sammy...it doesn't matter what people think...if it's the marks then jus keep ones that u know sh'es gonna like and add that one in..who cares.... i never listen to other peoples opinions if it's something i already like or have made up my mind about...no one elses opinion at the end of the day counts if it's urs u have a problem with... corrie

thanks guys...i brought the photo to school today to put in my AP portfolio and the OTHER photo teacher saw it and he was like "excellent" and it totally redeemed me...i was happy.
you're right about the blue. my photo teacher (the nice one) said the same thing....the blue one is a little much. yoko, it's actually 3 photos...if you look at the picture of Athena on the left side...you'll see "granville" written on the far wall...and if you look at Athena on the right side of the picture...you'll see "Granville" written backwards. that's cuz it's actually two pictures. i reversed one side to have the Athena back to back with herself...and then to cover up the "seam" down the middle...i just superimposed Athena's face in between the two back-to-back Athenas. it kinda covered up the seam but if you look closely, you can still see the awkwardnesses of it all. so yeah...it looks like 3 athenas in one picture. oh and as for the two black strips at the top of the print, i just overexposed the top and bottom parts to light....

I think that your photography is excellent. Here what you should do.... Contact Silverfish, he's a professional photographer, who teaches art and phtography. He's forte is Rave related photos. Also If you want, I will get you into a few parties that I am playing at for free. Then you could take some pictures there... The one catch for that is, I would like it if you took one or two pics of me spinning. Sorry I have that kinda ego Also, I am doing a tape soon that will be in stores. If you wanna do the cover I would be totatly up for putting a picture that you did on the cover and giving ya credit. This is only if you really wanna try doing photography at raves though...
