i had a large sum of money to deposit.
i made sure i called in advance to specifically to ask that if any of it would be held IF had to make the deposit to an atm.
i was told because of the type of account i have, if an atm deposit is done, i could have up to $2000 of it immediately.
i made the deposit.
i went to use my debit card, got that fun insufficient funds message.
i went to the bank to investigate further.
TURNS OUT ALL MY MONEY IS HELD BECAUSE THE KIND OF ACCOUNT I HAVE HOLDS ANY MONEY DEPOSITED TO AN ATM FOR 5 BUSINESS DAYS.

i would have done it today, but i didnt want to cause a huge nasty scene in the bank.

another thing i could suggest if you planning on opening a new account elsewhere make sure to tell them your purpose, that the reason you are looking to open a new account is to make sure that situations like today's don't ever happen again.... i've seen it work for others, any other financial institution wants your money

all my deposits are done by teller just cause I don't trust the ATM not releasing my money.

TD Canada Trust has long hours of operation which allows me to make transactions at the teller after work and on Saturdays

As for Allison's situation, open an account with Coast Capital. I looooove them. Online banking is awesome, I have never had a hold on ATM deposits, their customer service rocks, and their financial planners have helped me A LOT. They also have the highest interest rate in Canada on 90 day term deposits right now! Also, their Free Chequing, Free Debit and More account is great - no more stupid user fees! And you don't pay to use other credit union ATM machines, either.

I've never really had a problem with BMO, I've had them since I was like 3, but I haven't been using them for awhile, because I work for Scotia Bank and I have to have an account with them if I want to get paid. :P Free banking is the best kind of banking. :)

yeah i agree, i am with Westminster Savings. and its like sister company to coast capital. and i have never ever had an issue with them.
