Ash, serious advice from our good friend Garth Algar. Tell him:

"Get over it. Go out with somebody else."

There's not too much he can respond to it, and yeah, you break his heart. But his heart needs to be broken before he can realize that he's putting a lot of effort into something that he shouldn't.

Be sure to emphasize the "go out with somebody else" thing though, because it would probably be better if he didn't go into bitter hatred towards relationships in general just because he was a chump.
