the saying 'have your cake and eat it too' i believe is only a few hundred years old and was when cakes were generally elaborately done, meaning some one wanted to have their cake(marvel in it's beauty) and enjoy it's goodness also. understand?

Actually the point of this thread wasn't to discover the etemology of these phrases but just to point out their sillyness and to bask in all the silly phrases the english language has such concocted.
