I think you could consider a DJ to be somewhat of a musician if they make something new out of the tracks they play....such as with scratching, juggling, mash ups etc. But a mix DJ, beatmatching one track after another is not much of a musician.

I think it is very stupid to say EDM producers aren't musicians. Are they not creating music? Something doesn't have to played with a classical instrument to be considered music. If someone is creating melodies and basslines and everything that comes together to create a piece of music on their computer then I think they are most certainly musicians

I've already addressed this in the thread. But I'll say it again, just for you. Their technicians. The whole idea behind producing edm, is you don't actually have to know anything about music to make it. your just programing a sequencer. Yes, Being a musician requires that you know how to play an instrument. Thats the whole fucking point!
Some producers do, and incorporate this. Generally, they write better tracks too. Because they understand what it is that their doing. This is, however, a very small amount of the edm producer population.

it still requires a musical ear to become a good musician.. i've heard some people that produce that are utterly terrible and just don't know how good music all blends together properly

so being a producer still means musician.. when i hear the word techincian.. i think about sombody fixing your computer for bugs.. or hooking up large stereo equipment ect..

yeah you still have to be able to understand music like a composer, and have a musical ear......not just anyone can create nice sounding melodies and rhythms and know what samples/instruments go well together, with proper timing and organization.

you're basically saying that if someone doesn't use classical music notation then they aren't a musician........because edm producers are composing music in the same way a classical music composer does just without the notation

Yep... but, its not classical music notation. First of all, it was developed in the early baroque. and secondly, its "standard" music notation, everybody uses it :p

thats not what I fucking said! I said (a while back) a musician is someone who can play an instrument, play it well, and be able to work their way around it. They don't have to read sheet music, composers do. I'm pretty sure most rock musicians can't read manuscript. Fucking read before you repeat yourself so I don't have to!

^ unfortunately no. but give it time. more of this will start popping up over time. orchestras in a lot of cities are trying new things to attract new crowds.

lol well that's your own definition of musician..... but if you look up the word in the dictionary i think you'll find that EDM producers qualify
