After a huge 2009, Pop and Lock records kicks of 2010 with the first of a series of remix ep's that the label will be releasing.
One of Australia's finest, Karl Sav (named last year by beatport as one to watch in the next year), steps up to the plate to put his twist on Myagi's rave-house stomper "Thug." Originally released in 2009, "Thug" garnered huge support and lots of love thanks to its feelgood synth riffs, funky bass and elaborative, constantly building groove. Karl does a great job of turning the track on its head, ripping it down to a pounding breakbeat and using the best bits of the original to perfect effect as he gets the glowsticks out for this heads down rocker of a remix.
Next up is the US's Rigorous Intuition, who reinterpret "Year of the Gun" as a moody funky roller. Great spacial effects blend with a great shuffle-y break and a proper b-boy bassline that work a great left right combo.
While the original "Year of the Gun" bordered on melodic tear-out, the remix actually has a great breakdance feel, and uses stuttery vocal chops and wicked drum programming with wonderful results - amazing percussion and wonky tones make this a surefire rocker.
Finally we have the winner of ground breaking VST company FXPANSION's Myagi remix contest, in the form of DJ Mans' remix of Payback.
One of the standout tracks on Myagi's much-lauded "3 Years of Sunrise" album, Payback is a driving tech-funk / house track with a raspy bassline, wicked vocal snippit and drums of doom. DJ Mans strips the track down to its' basic elements, utilizing select bits of the original overtop of a throbbing minimal / tech-house groove and building it nicely into a perfect dancefloor track. Watch for more from this guy, it was no accident that he came first in the competition - great sensibilities make this a perfectly put together tune.
