Kraig is a jewel in the roughKraig is a jewel in the roughKraig is a jewel in the roughKraig is a jewel in the roughKraig is a jewel in the rough
Calling all audio God's!

Akeel or whoever else for that matter...

So what motivated me to post this is I just dropped one of the best sets as far as mixing goes here at home... those that spin will know what I'm talking about especially when you finished and your like, D'oh... I should'a been recording that.

So here's my prob... I use a laptop here at home and therefore don't have the proper connections (as a sound card would for a regular PC) on it... Having said that, I can't record a set properly nor is the laptop a super high end one anyway.

I am assuming my best bet is an MD player hooked right up to the mixer? -- I was chattin with Cinto and mentioned that you can transfer the recorded audio from the MD player onto my laptop via an interface cable and lose no sound quality?

Can someone confirm this and if it is the case, what are some quality MD Players/Recorders? If this isn't the best way, let me know some others!

Peace.

would you be going out and buying an MD player to do this?
cuz that would be a pretty good idea...
what kind of input jacks do you have on your laptop?

The smaller ones... I wanna say mini-DIN 8 but I think that may be in-correct.

I have my laptop hooked up to my three channel mixer.

And yes, I would be buying an MD Player.

at hipnotik we use cool edit pro on our computer, which is odviesly hooked up to our mixer , if u have youre laptop hooked up to youre mixer all u have to do is find that program and it allows u to record, edit and do all kinds of fancy things and from there u can make cds send the mix to friends , whatever u want, plus it wont cost u anything considering u can download it from kazaa, but if u want to record youre sets u play at partys then it might be a good idea to buy the md player

I hear ya dude, and that is a great interim solution.

I am looking something that I can have here at home as well so that I can make different mixes and sheat. -- This is the primary reason why I have procrastinated in making a CD because I would rather do it in the comfort of my own home and on my equipment.

Yeah man... you are more than welcome to come over whenever to record whatever you need to...

I just mean I want some sort of setup like that! Hmmmmmmm... maybe you can look at my setup when you are over here and let me know my options.

I personally think a higher-end MD player is the way to go though.

you have a couple choices there Kraig.... First...Buy a new computer with a proper sound card...2. The MD idea does work...actually works pretty good... 3. You can get a stand alone burner..there are stand alones that have audio inputs to them...so your able to plug straight in from your mixer...So i've been told...don't think i've actually seen one. 4. Get Azim to buy you a recording studio...lol

I will reply to each point:

1.) I spent to much money on records to be able to afford to buy a new computer!

2.) Yeah... I think an MD is the way I am going to go but it's hella expensive for a proper one.

3.) Sounds sketchy.

4.) Ahahahhahahahahhahahah... he has no cash to burn!

if your laptop has a firewire port, you might even be better off spending the cash on a firewire audio interface, I noticed midiman has a new one out that looks decent but I have no idea what the cost is. I use the midiman omni studio and think its pretty sweet. Maybe post the specs on the laptop. Your money would most likely be better spent on an audio interface if it is a possibility with your laptop, IMO.

actually Kraig...you don't need to spend a huge amount of cash on a mini disc.... You can actually use the small portable ones...the sound quality on them is great... even for recording...used one at school for press conferences and was amazed by the quality.

AUDIO GOD TO THE RESCUE!!!
K The most direct route to the recorder will always give you the best quality if you can keep the recording completely digital that will also keep things immaculate.

If you want a mini disk I would look in to some of sony’s new models as they have data transfer capabilities (keeping everything digital good). A common problem with the mini discs is that people set their records/players to utilise the most disk space and operate at an mp3 quality ( BAD!!!) make sure the mini disc is set to stereo (44.1 16 bit) quality

The stand alone recorders are great you can come visit me at l&m and I can organise one for ya. the rental charges are about $40 for a weekend. So it’s not that expensive.

Or get you computer sorted. As long as you can record in stereo and you have some kind of audio input (there should be a mic input on your laptop or the line input in your tower )
There are a ton of recording programs that you can download, (if you do need soft ware I can get some for you)

This is the best way to get it done cuz it’s as direct as you can get to record your shit.

even if the sample rate of an MD is set to 44.1khz 16bit the data is still compressed before being written to the md. there's not a huge sound quality difference but if you do play back a hard disk recording and an md recording of the same material you will definately notice it. not recommended if you want you want a super duper top notch demo

i've never noticed but if I'm really feeling anal about my quality I'll mix in the studio straight in to protools

So basically you are all saying I am better off to record directly into PC or my laptop.

The only input connection I have on it though is my Mic connection... is that okay?

EXACTLY!! why would you think of recording to a MD first? Cut the middle out and go straight to the PC.

Record onto something like Soundforge, Cuebase or Wavelab or any other sound recording programs.

You must have a good sound card to do this or else it will sound like KAKA! Ive got an external Creative Sound Extigy that you can connect to your laptop or Tower Via USB that works supurb if you wanna borrow it for a night. You just plug your mixer straight into it and bammmo!

I always wondered about the USB soundcards, I know midiman / maudio also make one but haven't heard anything about it. If they work decently then I think your money would be much better spent on one of those for sure.

eh hem! the only reason i suggested the MD kraig was to allow you to record without any glitches! reason is that I don't think you laptop has the speed or space to do it correctly. the middle divice is to play it safe... you don't want it to do what it did to me on my old PC.. half way through.. virtual memory too low!!! or not enough HD space!!! or fuck you ass hole this is too much to handle! lol anyway! I got the MD to record my sets when i play out so that if it is good i can do the whole LIVE @ thing.. who knows it's up to you .. i'll come check it out soon! let you know what you are going to need! ok!

Sounds like a plan Cint-to-tha-HO.

I know have tons of space. I have an external 120GB hard drive attached to my laptop... space is not an issue.
