I go out, I hand out demos, I promote myself online I even started my own night for 6 months and booked all the "right" dj/promoters to get myself some bookings back (which the favours were never retuened I might add). I've been a resident of AGROCULTURE since nearly the start. I've opened and closed shows for 5 years, I play for free (or don't get paid) 99% of the time. I've paid my dues. I get booked to headline in other cities/provinces (based on my skills, talent and hard to find track selection), but when it comes to Vancouver I couldn't get a booking to save my life (even at AGROculture now). So I offended you. whatever, I just say it how it is and I could care less how people see it. - AWOL
I feel the same way... Vancouver's scene is pretty fucked up... it's like all the promoters here have forgotten the natural order of things... it's all about the money here, period. When I get booked, I get booked by people who have the right ideas about how the whole thing works... I don't have to have groupies because the true promoters don't require something so stupid because they know that they make their own success... it's not my job to make a promoter rich, it's my job to play fucking wicked music and make the crowd that THE PROMOTER gathers to THEIR party... DANCE. THAT... is my job... I don't sell your tickets, I don't hand out your fliers, I don't kiss your nuts I'm just glad that it's all gonna be a moot point anyways when Vancouver's big earthquake hits and kills us all now that I've gotten out my true feelings on this subject, I step back and watch

Hey man,
You had some really great points in your post... that's really great about your spinning stuff, sounds like you're really dedicated and I really respect that. Tunes is what it's alllll about. But... About the money thing, I completely understand that it always becomes an issue, and so it does everywhere at every rave, in any city. It's always a factor. Basically without money, there's no party. But I understand that some people do blow the money topics out of proportion, rubbing in how rich they'll be after the gig, or blatantly expressing that it's why their doing it. But man, it's Dj's like you, and many others, who keep people grounded and remembering what it's all about. If someone is throwing a party for money and it is clear that it's the only purpose for the party that night, man can you ever feel it. From the moment you walk in the door. There's either a huge show with nice things, but very little feeling to it... or there's an empty room with 2 decorations hanging around the dj booth, no vibe, and you paid 40 bucks for a pre-sale ticket. People know the difference between a good party/bad party... and, my friend, they will eventually catch on. These promoters may make some coin at the first few gigs, but most of these promoters disappear within a year, go into debt, or just walk away. Now promoters aren't all just money-hungry bastards, lol. They do it for a reason and some promoters become successful for a reason too. We have the promoters who go big, but their heart is just as big as the budget... and you can FEEL that more than anything throughout the course of the night. You have fun, you're relaxed, everything just feels good. They put out big money (that most don't have to begin with), not just to get big money back, but for the purpose of the event itself. If they make their money back, great, but if they lose money, it was all worth the hassle in the end. Even those who lose big and keep going... that's amazing heart too if you ask me. Alot of promoters just barely break even at most events, but all alot of you see is expensive ticket prices and streams of people giving them money at the front door... and I completely understand how that must look, but trust me... that money is not always going into the promoter's pocket. Unfortunately, money is always going to be an issue to keep parties going... We should be thankful there are people nice and brave enough to suck up 10,000-50,000 bucks and give it their best shot. Here's another way of looking at it: You love to play music, right? Music is free to listen to... but you still have to pay for the records, the turntables, the mixer and the apartment you use to play the music in. Music isn't about money, but it's the part of wanting to spin that makes it all worth while in the end. You pay alot of money to do it because you love it, even if you don't make anything back. It's people with heart, like yourself, that keeps us having fun and seeing past all the money issues. A well promoted event makes you feel like the money you paid that night was fair and well worth it. About the Vancouver gigs, keep trying man!! There's a ton of opportunities, I promise you... You just have to shmoose a little... make connections... network.... show 'em your tits. Works every time... *buttons up shirt* Take care! -chriSsy!-
