Those + and x symbols at the top corner of every post are for karma.
If you like what someone posts, give them + (green/good) karma. If you dislike it, give them the x (red/bad) karma. You can go to your "myfnk" link at the top of the page and see what people gave you karma for, and who you've given karma to.
In your posts, underneath the join date, you'll see some stars and some boxes. Stars represent your post count and boxes represent your karma. The more positive karma you get, the more green boxes you get. The more negative karma you get, the less green boxes you get. If you run out of green boxes but still get negative karma, then you start to get red boxes. If you have red boxes, then you can still give karma but it won't have any value.
The number between the karma buttons represents how much karma a particular post has garnered. Posts that receive -5 karma or lower are considered "voted down" and are collapsed. You cannot give more than one piece of karma per post, and when you give a user karma you have to wait some time before you're allowed to give them more (so you don't just go around vindictively giving tons of bad karma to a person you dislike, basically).
I think that's most of it. There used to be comments attached to the karma feature but that got dropped.
