To all you Live PA/laptop warriors out there
You need to get this:
http://www.sonalog.com/ best midi controller... ever... then it'll actually look like you're doing more than just checking your e-mail when you perform. Last edited by dj_soo; Feb 24, 06 at 04:55 PM. |

now that was awfully negative mux!
"Up to 54 (27 per arm) controller changes at one time. " thats what i found appealing about it. the videos didnt do a product like this any justice (they were shit). it's a really cool idea that I'm sure will be worked on and refined to be a more attractive product in the future. I like the idea of being able to have more control than the standard 2 hands and feet maximum. Unless I'm mistaken, really complex shit could be performed live that wouldnt be possible before. Depends, do you mean the MIDIBOX64-based controllers, or the SH-101 MIDI mods, or the Plogue Bidule software controllers I'm currently working with? Maybe the algorhythmic MIDI systems I've built in software back on the Amiga, or the complex interactions between the Nord Modular and my other hardware synths? Hell, I've got a custom joystick-based MIDI controller (using parts scavenged from the alley) up on the workbench right now. I've been building and modifying MIDI controllers and synths for seven or eight years now... I speak fluent sysex, do you? Quote:
Don't get me wrong, the concept is interesting, but *man*, the execution... did you check out those videos? The only places I could see that being used would be: - ghey VNV Nation-style industrial pop - MIDI-based motion capture a la early Soft|image - Noise guys at Blim on a Thursday night One of the more interesting MIDI control systems I've seen was some guys in town working with an iCube (google it) and MAX/MSP... they built a 30' thick black silk rope studded with optical bend sensors. The rope itself was a MIDI controller; they then had a troupe of dancers performing a dance with the rope. The dancers danced with the rope, which affected the music, which in turn affected the dancers... they got some kind of government arts grant for it. Same thing tho - really interesting idea, totally ghey in execution. |

For a *really* interesting MIDI controller (tho probably way too geeky for the average FnK'er), check out this site:
http://samchillian.com/aboutsam.html The "Samchillian Tip Tip Tip Cheepee" controller is a heavily modified (and patented) QWERTY keyboard, which sends MIDI. It does not work the way you expect it to. The guy who designed and built it is either a musical genius or completely insane. Check out the "instructional video"... (admittedly, this is another controller that is awesome in theory, but will never be widely successful...) |

I believe it was students in berkley university made an optical mixer type device. Comprised of an overhead projector... objects with chips in them a white board and a computer... They were able to make sampled loops and what not and blend them in and such.... and this was well before that touch screen thing circulating on the net right now. |
