^ actually, if you want to mix using only the laptop, Torq has better features for that.
Serato only allows for internal mixing using an external DJ mixer where Torq has an internal mixer setup. You can also bind a midi mixer controller to Torq so you can basically map all your faders and pitch controls to the midi mixer/controller and essentially mix without having to use decks at all. That being said, Serato >>>>>>> Torq. Torq sucks mainly for build quality and design issues - might be 1/2 the price but there's a reason for that... |

Personally, I wouldn't be looking for internal mixing - I much prefer the use of an actual controls to virtual ones any day. Not saying that software is inherently bad, but just that hands-on feel gives a lot more for me than hands off. Plus, external mixing means that I can headphone mix in the same fashion that I would if I were mixing two records.

The other programs have all these bells and whistles but also have a lot of issues with stability and bugs. However, if you really want to mix on only your laptop, or use a midi mixer to basically remove the turntables from your setup, then there are better options than Serato. If you want to DJ, stick with SSL. |

i've been rocking the vestax vci-100 with traktor scratch for the past little bit. works wonderful - if i wanna switch up to just use the vci-100 alone it works great or if you want to get tricky and use more than 2 decks in traktor. very impressed by the build quality. have tried nearly all of the other "digital" dj solutions like the kontrol dj, the xp10s, bcd 2000, and the xponent - this is the winner.
only complaint is the up faders are a bit stiff - but just haven't gotten the nerve yet to open it and rub it with gun oil... |

what about traktor scratch, traktor 3 or ableton? All the legendary DJs like jazzy jeff and biz markie are just floored by the new traktor scratch.
I rock traktor 3 with 2 midi controllers. I use a m-audio uc-33e to control mixer and fx parameters. I use an oxygen8 to control deck transport(start/stop + looping), beatmatching(pitch bending) and some other controls. This gives me plenty of hands on control for live party rockin. I prefer traktor 3 to ableton for live mixing because it feels more like djing with turntables, I'm involved with the live traktor set from start to stop. There isn't as much pre-programming for a traktor dj set vs. ableton set. Traktor mixing is kinda tricky, but the programs possibilites are intense. I've been trying to push the program to its limits by experimenting with different tricks to create unique sound effects for dynamic mixing. i know this wasnt initially about traktor or ableton, but I was surprised no one mentioned these excellent alternatives to tables, serato+torq. |
