I went to a visiting scholar's lecture the other day. The speaker was talking about environmental shit and how particular organizations or institutions fail to address issues like GHG emissions and point-source pollution. He was pretty clear that he thought 'the man' was out to get us and presented evidence to that effect. It dawned on me about half way through the lecture that while the scholar's critiques held up based on his evidence, but he was clearly lacking the whole story. He saw the issues from 'the outside' - he'd been an academic his whole life and had never worked with 'the man'. Because of that, his critiques were naive and uninformed. He was happy to make conspiracy theories left and right, not knowing or appreciating the full complexities of the challenges that face 'the man'. I thought how easy it is for him to point out the some half-important issues, based on what he has been able to gleen from whatever sources he had.

FNK's resident half-wit conspiracists/activists are clearly right up there with our academic friend. They bitch about the issues, come up with radical ideas and then get onto some soapbox to enlighten the world. They're clearly 'outsider' voices though - naive and immature, with no clear grounding in reality and no clear understanding (recognition?) of the institutional constraints that exist in this world. A nice clean, interesting argument is what they look for because it's pallatable to them and the masses.

Why is it that activists are almost always young, educated, single, angry and mobilized? Because they've yet to get a real fucking job in which they are put in 'the man's' decision-making chair. You all clearly have partial understandings of the world.

Characterizing or criticizing methodology without any intimate knowledge of:

_those involved
_historical context
_principles of organizing
_goals

IS ACADEMIC, as well as being elitist and ignorant to the nature of the history of significant large-scale movements for social change throughout history. Your idea of institutional restraints is in fact very valid and relevant, but you fail to recognize or understand that the nature of struggle is to challenge and ultimately destroy such institutional restraints that do not operate in the best interests of the masses you speak of in such a condescending manner.

The masses ARE in fact the end all be all. They are the means to ultimate change. The work of any organization that regards themselves as revolutionary or otherwise is to create a leadership, a living breathing machine that is capable of steering/guiding and winning the trust of the masses when they are on the brink of a significant shift.

The idea of activism as you prescribe to it, is only a component of a methodology in trying to build relationships and find potential for leadership and at the same point an environment that further galvanizes the polarization of opinion within a community. It is only when this polarization occurs that oppressive forces or structures are exposed and the nature of struggle is exposed to regular working people.

Lastly, for the record, do not ever speak about someone, you do not know and use only a tertiary understanding of what they have spoken to typecast them. You do not know me personally, nor have you ever been involved in any work within the organizations I support and work with. This isn’t a shit-slinging contest, nor is it a popularity game. If you want to challenge someone is a serious manner that is for the benefit of finding solutions, than utilize the appropriate channels available. You have been on this board for sometime now, and continue to run your mouth without any responsibility for your words. I guarantee, that will change.

Actually, if I'm trying to imply anything, it's that our culture is much happier arguing pointless, futile arguments that hold no weight to the real issues at hand than they are accepting information as simply suggestion and using that suggestion to make up their own minds. Instead of seeing John's post, regardless of whether it was cut and pasted or not, and hitting up Google to research these facts to see if he did have a solid point they chose to cut him down and, in turn, begin an assinine argument with eachother.
