I work right beside the BC place... we heard something (like a "boom") but just assumes it was a big gust of wind... then we looked out the window and saw that there was no dome up anywhere.

Thats one thing I've taken to notice when I moved here... Buildings get torn town and put up so fucking fast.
My house was the same way. Brand new, and we're very close to taking the construction company to court over the numerour problems we've found. It seems like we find another every day. So this stadium colapse doesn't suprise me... same deal as my house, just on a bigger scale.

Ya its sad. Especialy in a place thats on the corners of like 3 tectonic plates, You'd think the standards and practices would be much higher in BC then anywhere else in Canada.

according to the vancouver sun, bc place was deflated ON PURPOSE after an initial tear was found in the roof. they shut off the fans and deflated it.

I believe that has to do with construction unions ending over 15-20 years ago. I believe a lot of building code standers were droped around the same time or had something to do with the big change. In other words ever since Vancouver buildings built since that time on ward are shity leaky condos and homes. The house my grandfather built over 60 years ago has had less problems than a condo 5 years old.

it probably also has a lot to do with a bunch of the sub-contracts getting low balled way past the point of reason by companies that are simply fronts for some un-named gangs.
