Expedia? Really? :047:
I'd say, go to a travel agent and map out the best flight pattern for your trip in person. A lot of sites uprate their flights & packages. If you stay in Tokyo... try to arrange for a home stay or something. You might have to do a traditional welcome gift exchange, but the costs of staying there would be greatly cheaper. Quote:

If you deal directly with an Airline you can usually get a better price.
Investigate... for Southeast and the rest of Asia you can talk to Cathay Pacific, JAL, All Nippon, China Eastern and Air Canada. They all depart from YVR and they all have major destinations and or Hubs in the areas you're looking for. |

if you want thailand for the culture and real deal, head north east. if you want to party with foreigners and lounge on the beach, head south.
if you have specific questions regarding travel, customs, lifestyle or anything else check this forum, it is a great resource. http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/ have fun Topanga. |

If you want my advice (2 years veteran in Japan):
Definitely head down to Tokyo, it's a fun city. Visit Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Yoyogi Park, and Akihabra. You can't really miss these place. There is also the Fuji buliding in Odaiba (as others have mentioned) Ask about going to Donkey-Hotey (if you are feeling lucky) It's a crazy mall open till 5am. Then grab a Shinkansen train and head to Nara. It is a must see! Nara houses the largest Buddha in the world, there are deer everywhere, etc. I don't want to give away the surprises. If you like 3D art, then head over to Osaka to enjoy Universal Studios Japan, Yes, another American theme park, but a whole lot of fun. If you still have time, find out how real Japanese people live in Nagoya. This is the third largest city in Japan and is really interesting place. Unlike Tokyo, you won't see foreigners every other city block. People are really friendly and like speak English. Thailand! This is really a crazy country. Fortunately, you are going when the hotel rental rates are low. Therefore, book a place in Bangkok yourself. Call and reserve a hotel before you leave or at the airport. Hotels can be found online and in Lonely Planet and Let's go books. Bangkok airport can be a bit dodgy, you don't want to spend much messing around, so get a metered cab and get to your hotel ASAP. Overall, I find Bangkok to be pretty nasty. There are tourist traps like Siam square and the Nana district. Check out Cowsan road, the Grand Palace, and Night market near the Muay Thai kick boxing area. Sorry, I don't recommend hanging out in Bangkok for very long. Definitely!! Go to Ayudaya, I mean this is the old capital and will not be available for much longer. Ayudaya is 30 min north of Bangkok by train. rent a scooter for $1.50 for the day and check out some real world history. It's amazing!! Another 30 min ride to Lopburi if you want to see "monkey town." My sister likes this place. Supposedly, the town is run by monkeys! OK, get out of central Thailand and go to the beach. You only needed a few days to see all these other sites. Fly ($45) to Crabi and from there head over to Ao Nang or Railey and enjoy the sunshine, white sand beaches, amazing food, etc. Everyones experience is different, but please try the " Elephant Jungle Ride." Also, there is Ko pen yang beach for the ravers, full-moon party, and I can do that in Vancity stuff. Yep, have a good time and don't worry, everyone is welcoming. I hope this has been of assistance, have a good time. Last edited by P.A.R.T.Y; Jan 25, 07 at 01:26 PM. |

In Japan try www.couchsurfing.com
it's really safe and has been a great success for me in India. Staying in peoples homes is not only free, but you get to stay and get advice from locals. Not to many people doing it in Thailand though, some in Bangkok. But it's so damn cheap there that it doesn't matter anyway |

this is where I stayed in tokyo...in a cute residential neighbourhood, and about $80 a night for a traditional tatami room...the website doesn't do it justice, it's BEAUTIFUL. The coffee shop across the street is awesome, and it';s right by a train station, yummy restaurants and a grocery store.
