I think it was less of trying to "impress" the girl and more of having a family moment where each participant puts in an equal amount of social effort.

It's ok lots of people are like that with their families but then you grow up and learn to contribute. While your living at home these situations seem like a hassle but then you move out and realize to make your family work you have to put in some effort instead of bitching about everything when you guys get together. Maybe if you chill a little every small event in your life won't be "i can't believe this just fucking happened!"
