People who refrain from eating most types of meat but still consume fish are actually more correctly termed as a pescetarian, and may do so because they are opposed to factory farming and how animals are slaughtered and/or their impact on the environment. There are also some forms of Buddhism that forbid eating meat on moral grounds, but not fish. There's a few reasons.
As someone who has been meat free (if you want to label me, i'm a vegetarian, and no, I don't eat any seafood either) since the age of about 13, what people choose to eat and call themselves doesn't bother me at all. It's the people that make a huge deal about what people choose to eat/not eat/call themselves. To each their own. |

Id like to give Miss Myra an Amen...
I've been a Veg...or a leafy one for about 6 years now. I do eat fish, just because I do..a lot of it has to do with my health, and I can get a lot of nutrition in that way. I choose not to eat meat for many reasons, but then again I do eat fish....I dont claim to be anything....i just am...and I dont classify myself in any realmish category...i enjoy fish, i eat fish....There are meats I dont eat due to the process and treatment of the animals, but I also dont eat it because I feel healthier as a being. I guess people have a tendancy to call or classify me as a veg because Ground Round and I have good times together...and it's just worked itself into my lifestyle.. Like Miss Myra said, to each their own. It's just one of those personal decisions..like people who chose to eat organically for certain reasons.. Hmm..i can see why you would question that though..I wonder if this goes on at those like really exclusive pasta nights when the regulars come out and eat pasta...and then one Tuesday night (seems like a good night for a pasta night) Pasta Bob is like...hey, isn't that Pasta Bill over there in the Greek food place?.. and he's completley shunned..... I for one would like to understand the people who are madly in love with Pistachio ice cream. |

I don't really understand what the problem is here. It's called Pescetarianism. It works for some people, myself included.

Why must ppl be labeled with what they eat?
I try very hard to not eat a lot of meats for many different reasons such as pork, tuna, and bottom feeders. Although I am not kosher, muslim, or vegetarian I find it much easier to explain my diet as if I was instead of explaining ALL my personal believes as to why I prefer not to eat certain kinds of meats. ANIMAL = PART OF THE ANIMAL KINGDOM
FISH = PART OF THE ANIMAL KINGDOM therefore FISH = ANIMAL Vegetarians do not eat ANIMALS. Vegetarians do not eat anything that comes from the killing of animals, such as gelatin (in gummy candies, skittles, some types of yogurt, marshmallows, guinness beer, etc), soups with chicken/beef/fish stock, red smarties - they containe cochineal aka carmine or "E120" which is made from female beetles native to Mexico. A lot of moral vegetarians (like me) also choose to only eat organic and free-range dairy products because the animals are treated in a humane manner, compared to the disgustingly inhumane ways animals are treated at some large dairy farms. I am a moral vegetarian and have been for 10 years. Some people choose vegetarianism for health reasons, which is fine, but they often do not realize that there are animal by-products in their food, and if they do, they don't mind. Often, these are the type of people who would just "pick off" or "eat around" the meat. This frustrates the living heck out of me not because it's their choice, but because by calling themselves "vegetarians" they are suggesting to those around them that do not understand vegetarian culture that it should be acceptable for any vegetarian to "pick off" or "eat around" the meat. Being a moral vegetarian, nothing pisses me off more than "oh, the potato salad has bacon in it, but you can just eat around it, right?" NO. The answer is no. No I will not eat red smarties, nor will I have that delicious-looking rice krispie square. It's been said already in this thread that those who eat fish/seafood but no other animals are called pescatarians NOT vegetarians. You wouldn't call a tyrannosaurus rex an omnivoire because it was NOT, it was a carnivoire. So why call a pescatarian a vegetarian? |

Beans, legumes, SOY, dairy
It's not like vegetarianism is some new-fangled concept! It's not exactly difficult to eat a balanced diet and get all the necessary nutrients without eating meat. |
