Vogue Sept Issue is over 86% Advertising
FULL STORY HERE
Not that I read Vogue or anything, but apparently the September issue is 840 pages thick. Of those 840 pages a staggering 727 pages are advertising leaving just 113 pages, less than 14% of the magazine for editorial content. My guess is a further 50 of those pages are just glorified advertising sections written by staff writers. That's insane! over 86% of the magazine is PAID advertising! Anybody know what the cover price is on an issue of vogue? How the fuck can they charge money for that crap? |

I preferred "fuck encyclopedia" myself, sort of like a detailed karma sutra of sorts...
Also, Robyn nailed what I was going to bring up. Ads show people what's available and style ideas. Why should Vogue put together an article showing "what's hot for fall" when 700 companies will pay THEM to fill their magazine with what women should be wearing this fall. It's either Gucci's word, or Vogue's...let's hope the reader can make up their own "fuck mind". |

^ and thats 840 pages of glossy paper not recycled. However im sure Nev will reuse her issue for her next arts and crafts class :D
Im actually surprised how cheep the mag retails for. Im pretty sure the last time I veiwed the price it retailed for around $12. Than again I only buy magazines at the air port. Last edited by R Wellbelove; Sep 03, 07 at 04:33 PM. |

Are you? How much money do you think those 700+ pages of ads pull in? Don't you think those advertisers want Vogue to be read by the maximum number of people possible?
I'm surprised it isn't handed out free like those godawful daily rags 24 and Metro (the latter of which I like to refer to as "Google News: Print edition") Last edited by Grapes; Sep 03, 07 at 05:21 PM. |

also, vogue is a fashion magazine, not a news publication. i don't think they've ever claimed neutrality. something is hot or it's not. people read the magazine for the bias. besides, the ad page count isn't a good indicator of the magazine's quality anyway. more advertising dollars can lead to better quality content and magazines with less advertisements can be forced to pad content to make their magazines thicker. |

makes sense.
people who read vogue like to keep up with the trends. people who keep up with the trends need to be told what is trendy. people like that need and want to be marketed and advertised to..... i understand. its fasion and people like that but, advertising, marketing, fashionistas is pretty much bullshit,.....here ill pass it over to this guy, YouTube - Bill Hicks on Marketing |

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE OF VOGUE MAGAZINE IS BASICALLY THE BIGGEST SINGLE MAGAZINE PUT OUT ALL YEAR IN THE FASHION WORLD. NO DUH THAT BASICALLY EVERYONE IS ADVERTISING IN IT, EVERYONE IS SHOWING OFF THEIR FALL WINTER LINE.
IF YOU ARE A LARGE FASHION HOUSE, TO NOT BE MENTIONED IN SOME WAY IN THIS MAGAZINE IS BASICALLY SUICIDE. IN ADDITION TO BEING A MAGAZINE, IT IS ALSO ALMOST A GIANT CATALOG FOR WOMEN'S CLOTHES. |

Like I mentioned when at the airport I remember it retailing for something ridiculous like $12 knowing it was mostly full of adds. So im kinda surprised Nev bought it for $5. However any fashion addict would pay anything for it. The irony to the adds is that its something fashion ppl actually want. Being a win win situation I am surprised anything is being charge for the Mag. However it is a first class fashion magazine that I assure you can easily spend its funds on having super models, celebs, and top knoch fashion icons in each issue. Oh and don't forget the amazing glossy paper its printed on. |

i'd be surprised if they gave something away for free when they could charge anything for it. ;)

I'll say it again, Eighty-Six Percent. Now think about it this way: I think we can all agree that TV has sold out WAY more than any publication has (with the obvious exception we have with this issue of Vogue). Now, try and think of a TV channel, ANY channel where there is under 9 minutes of content for each hour of television. So a half hour TV show would consist of: 1. The open credits (60 seconds to two minutes) 2. followed by eight minutes of ads 3. then 60 seconds to 1 minute of of content (depending on the opening sequence, can't cut into that advertising time) 4. eight more minutes of ads 5. the closing credits (60 seconds to two minutes) 6. and then another 9 minutes of ads before then next show. Total: 23.5 minutes of advertising, 4.5 minutes of show. A nearly perfect inverse of the standard 22 minute programming segment. |

i know what 86% means, but repeat yourself as much as you want. anyway, the mediums are entirely different. television is scheduled and broadcast and we can't just skip right to the content. with magazines you can just flip a page to skip an ad, and as many people in this thread have already pointed out, the advertisements are part of the content anyway.
