question for the dj's/producers...
whatsup guys. i'm trying to get some self-promo shit together for my music. First things first, I need somewhere to upload my mixes and songs to.
How do you guys go about doing this, and what are some other helpful resources one would need for this? thanks |

The easiest and cheapest way is to use a free file hosting service, another option is to buy a basic website package and upload all your mix's to it.
Checkout mediafire and RapidShare: 1-Click Webhosting. They are two popular file hosts that are easy to use, i find mediafire to have the least hassle. As for a website do a google search for cheap hosting in van or see if anyone is willing to give you some space on their server. |

personally, to me, nothing seems less professional than guys who use a free service like sendspace or rapidshare or yousendit. Just all the ads and the convoluted download process seems kind of cheap. Invest a little cash and set yourself up a website or even just a dedicated host - it'll probably cost you like $20/month for a domain name and a server space, or just put the songs on myspace as a last resort...

Its all about having your own domain name and your own space. Whats nice about it to is that when you have a good hosting company then people will be able to download your sets/tracks faster instead of using rapidshare where it can take longer. I've come across many dj sets that I stopped downloading for the simple fact that it was taking way to long for it to download. So since you are selling yourself (self promo) you want quality behind it and the fast accessbility that you want your listeners to access. |

USUALLY YOU BECOME A DJ THEN BUY ME BEER AND THEN WHEN YOU GET GOOD AT DJING YOU GO 'SUP RAWB REMEMBER WHEN I BOUGHT YOU BEER, WELL HOST MY SHIT' AND THEN I GET ALL GUILTY AND AM LIKE 'YA MAN THAT WAS SOME SAM ADAMS, THATS NOT SO EASY TO GET, WHICH IS SUPRISING BECAUSE ITS A FULL FLAVOURED BEER THAT I THINK MANY PEOPLE CAN ENJOY' AND THEY YOU GO 'SHUT THE FUCK UP WHERE DO I UPLOAD' AND THEN I SAY 'D:'

but in my experience, there are slightly different politics for smalltown djing... getting gigs has been easy for me up north. the dj/rave community is very small and tight-nit. I already had a bit of a reputation for what I did, and it didnt take long for me to network with the other local key-players who appreciated my shared passion for the arts and music. however, the audience was always very unpredictable. It didn't come to any surprize that there isn't a huge demand for edm/hip hop events up north, so I was always prepared for the possibility of playing to a crowd of maybe 5 people! Now the audience was never that small.. but it got close. Even then, I still wore my poker face and rocked socks. I think one of the highlights of playing almost laughable events is that we brought out people from all walks of life. A great example...A kid and his mother came out to one of our free hip hop shows, kid couldnt have been much older than 5 or 6 years old. He saw our b-boys doing their thing to my dj set and started copying the breakdancing. He did an amazing job mimicing the breakers, when we asked him how long he'd been dancing he yelled enthusiastically that it was his first time (and wanted to dance more). Now normally, playing to little kids and their parents would really harsh my buzz (and any musician who takes himself seriously)... but it finally gave me an opportunity to be a positive influence/role model for the local youth. This was much more than I was expecting from simply doing some djing and mcing at a hip hop show! Music had always seemed quite selfish before, another vice, just another indulgence. So, It was so awesome to witness first hand the great power that music has;how it can be used for positive change. I kind of went of on a tangent...but ya...
