lol what are you talking about? Manufacturers have already had to slash their prices and they are predicting that if the current resource market keeps up that the Canadian dollar will be 1.10 to the US. |

I don't know why ppl are so horny w/ going to go shopping over the boarder, A.)Price of gas is still super high, not much savings there B.)the wait at the boarder can take up to 2.5 hrs for savings ranging from $20-$40, I know its certainly not worth my time. And due to our lovely friends at customs one can only come back with like a $100 worth of items within 24 hrs (exluding smokes and liquor, which is by far and away the biggest diff in price anyways down there)...
Now, with that said, yes, there are some good ways of saving some cash shopping. Buy.com - Computers, Electronics, Digital Cameras, Books, DVDs, Music, Games, Software, Toys, Sports they have some wicked deals there, you save yourself all the travel time, wear and tear on the vehicle, gas, time, blah blah. the internet stores seem to be the only places which can keep up with the changing dollar, most retailers, still have yet to catch on. Shipping on the internet as well isn't too expensive either, and pretty quick, usually within 3-5 or so, which is the usual wait time I have when buying music from CDJShop.com - Trance CDs, Dance CDs, MP3s, Vinyl and Merchandise For those who want to really maximize their savings, I hope that helps. Cheers |

^ Gas is around 2/3 of the price it is here. Two weeks ago it cost my mom $35 USD to fill up her tank that normally costs $55ish CDN.
In terms of shopping, especially for clothing and electronics, it's SO worth it. Check out American Eagle or Abercrombie prices in Canada vs the US - a pair of AE jeans that cost $49.50 here are $34.50 in the States. I was looking at an Abercrombie jacket on the Canadian website for $228, so I had my boyfriend check the store near his place in Miami to see how much it is and it's $168 USD!! For someone like me who goes to the States all the time anyways, it only makes sense to shop there and not here! Everyone is catching on to this - sales in Canadian retail stores especially those in cities near the border have been suffering incredibly. Not only are we losing our Canadian customers, but we normally have a lot of US tourists who aren't coming up here anymore because of our strong dollar. |

It's KILLING business, especially retailers and especially those in the downtown core. Instead of shopping downtown on the weekends, people are going to the States to shop. It's no exaggeration - store traffic counters confirm that the average store traffic is down 25-35% on weekdays and up to 60% on weekends. OUCH :(

^What are Canadian retailers thoughts on lowering prices? It doesn't make any sense buying stuff here when we can get it for so much cheaper across the boarder. Ill buy from Canadian stores here, but any big named American companies "Ill wait till I go to the states".
Whats really messed up is how our min wage is at $8 (ppl want it to go up to $10) but in the states its $6. Messed up economy or what. |

^ Canadian retailers still have to make their bottom line. In terms of lowering prices, they won't show until spring. It's difficult to lower prices immediately because the buys for the items you're seeing right now were made 4-6+ months ago. The buys that have been made since the Canadian dollar has been climbing will show up starting in Spring - a lot of items will cost up to 20% less.
US minimum wage varies by state. Federal minimum wage is $5.85 - increasing yearly on January 1st - but each state can increase it as they please. For example, Florida's minimum wage is $6.67, Washington State's minimum wage is $7.93 - these also increase yearly on January 1st. Cost of living is quite a bit less in most areas of the US compared to BC. As well, taxes are lower (Florida has no State income tax), so more money ends up in their pocket in the end. |
