In the 4 years that I have lived here I have never seen what the media calls a "ganster". Either its just a persons clothing style, or the attitute or a little bit of both. I know people that if you saw them on the street you would be very scared, but if you would sit down and talk to them there the most easy going and open minded people you could emagine.
The people the media classifies as thugs or gangsters are younger kids like my cousin who are generally insecure and need to put on a testosterone act of Male posturing and walks in order to feel accepted and this usually involves selling drugs and fighting to re-enfoce that act. Im not going to blame the drugs and the easy accessability to that, i blame the big brothers; the media and other influences, kids want to be like fifty cent, scareface, get rich or die trying. most of it is a fase but sometimes kids take it too far. You and your peers pressure eachother and Male attitudes erupt. |

Then there's the wannabes, who listen to a lil too much 50 cent and get in fights to prove how thug they are. possibly sell dime bags for somebody who is too smart for the petty stuff. i wouldn't blame media for anything.. gang violence tends to happen when you get in a fight or steal from the wrong person. i know a guy in a chinese gang and he got in a pretty minor fight in a club, and the guy came back with like 4 guys and 6 of the chinese guys all got stabbed...... over nothing really. |

yeah would someone please think of the olympics? if we don't get the crime situation under control, it could drastically effect everyone's enjoyment of professional figure skating. PRIORITIES PEOPEL!!! |

yeah, that's a great idea if you ignore the fact that all the money that these guys are fighting over is generated by sales of weed to the united states. Its an export crop its not canadian consumption funding this violence.

lets get this out of the way first. i love weed, but legalizing it is not going to cut down on gangs or violence, in fact it'll probably increase it. if weed is taken away, they will be forced to move to cocaine or meth, which will make the deals bigger along the risk, etc.
anyways, on to gang violence. no rise, just getting bigger attention since the targets are a bit high profiled than normal. new gangs aren't respecting the rules, and are fucking shit up for everyone. as such, in the next few months, we're either going to be hearing a few more shots, or none at all. either way, it'll get dealt with quick and then be silenced. |

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there. A person can live in New York their entire lives without meeting a single person in the Italian Mafia, does that mean that it doesn't exist, or that it isn't a major crime force in NYC? There's been about 4 major gang incidents in the last 3 months this year. The interesting thing that nobody in The Province or The Sun (the two alarmist newspapers ringing the whole GANG WAR headlines all over the place, incidentally both owned by the same company) is really looking at the per-capita crime rates, rather than the overall ones. This city is growing, and with more people comes more crime. |

I’ve lost many friends to the "gangster" life style. Now I pray that I don't open up the paper one day to read that they have been shot dead.
They have always been around, and always will be. The public killings will either get worse or we won’t hear anything for a few months. |

on a serious note. some friends of mine are involved in that crap...
it's really scary when they tell me that tensions are rising between the different groups.. One day they'll seem on top of the world, all their "debtors" have payed up so everythings bright and sunny. Then the next day you see these tough guys have a look in their eyes like most people do not get to see. What do you do when a guy comes to you because he is afraid of losing his life.. but you cannot get involved because you do not want to lose your own? All you can do is tell them the obvious, but they'll do what they want to do. it's unfortunate. |
