Some moments you don't need photos for, other times it will be a big event and so those photos can take you back to the "moment" when you look at them later. I have had some amazing experiences in my life: climbing mountains, white water sports, backcountry skiing, etc. and for most of these I don't have photos because they were before the days of the digital camera. I wish I had photos because a lot of the people on those trips are no longer a big part of my life and it's nice to look back on what photos I do have for nostalgia's sake.
You may not need photos to remember the moment, but I think they're better. It's like you'll never forget your wedding day or the birth of your children, but how much better would it be to have a video/photo of the bride and groom exchanging rings or the ecstatic looks on mom and dad's faces the first time they hold their new baby?
