ahh yes. the 51 piano 'black' series. thats a excellent panel.

the panle:
in your panels menu you should see a option called 'game mode' or something to that effect. its been a while since ive been through that models menu chain...longstory short that model has a little chip from microsoft to increase picture perfomance when gaming on a 360...turn that on and it should round out the edges.

also,if your picture settings are jacked way up try turning them down. reduce your sharpness(thats a important one) and ease up on color and contrast settings.

in 95% of problem cases, its signal related rather then panel related.

what model of box are you running?...let me know and i might be able to help. there are all sorts of options in the late model pvr boxes that you can set wich could help.

be proud of that set....its a good model.
Thanks for the tips on settings and game mode. I've used that mode before while using my friend's 360 but haven't used it while watching TV. I'll have to try it out when I get home. I'm out of town at the moment.

The PVR is a Motorola DCT6416. I've been to the wiki page on how to access the menu and changed some stuff around but not much.

well, he did say audio. and unless you're running some genelec 1036s on some bryston amps the chances of someone being able to tell the differences is pretty much nill. video is a different matter.

the only big difference I usually notice for sound is surround sounds versus regular stereo. for the picture quality you can tell so easily between high def and low def. what I wonder is how much of a difference you could see between high end HDMI cables and the cheap ones. I'll probably do a test in the next few months.

i think it's a big giant waste of time and money unless done properly which is usually a very expensive proposition and fairly difficult to do well. it also serves very little purpose other than being "neat".

ummm its not hard to make a lower end system sound good.
its all in speaker placement at the correct distances and angles in relation to the primary listening position, just as you would with a high end system. the space they occupy is also very important. closed rooms with minimal furniture make achieving the proper sound a lot easier as the sound is more predictable. all common sense. a lot of systems even have auto-calibration that time the speakers so they hit your central point at the right times.
i couldnt live without my surround, makes every game and every movie so much more immersive.

it's hard/impossible to make lower end systems sound good period. add 6 extra speakers and delay calibrations to the mix and it becomes nearly pointless (with a low to mid range system) imo. fuck, adding a sub properly is a pain in the ass. the ideal system (for me) is a clean pre amp/power amp and 2 good speakers.

here's the comparison: spend 1K on a stereo system. spend 1k on a surround system. compare (double blind, of course). neither will be top of the line, but i would bet the stereo system will give you more satisfaction.

i guess the other thing to point out is i listen to music. i place very little value on "emersive" video games (which i usually turn the sound off) or movies. i play video games for gameplay and i watch movies for dialogue/story/visual stimulation not ambient sounds. most movies don't even take advantage of surround sound very well (probably because it's a huge pain in the ass to record and mix).

I think the problem is that a lot of this is very subjective. I have a $500 Sony 6.1 surround sound system set up that makes my small living room sound great to me. with the bass turned up just a enough to get some rumble I can play music that sounds loud but you can easily talk over in a regular voice. for movies or games you can turn it up a little further for a "theater" style experience. honestly who really needs to spend $1000 on a stereo for their apartment? your neighbors would hate you very quickly... on the other hand I'm sure some people that say work in the recording industry would hear my stereo and want to claw out their ears.

n/p. should be implicit in the discussion though. the no. 1 piece of advice for anyone buying audio is "use your ears". if you don't think it sounds good then it doesn't sound good.
