realy depends on what size you want and what type of content your going to be using it for.
smaller screen sizes go with a lcd. larger screen sizes go with a plasma.
plasmas produce FAR supirior colours to lcd. each pixel in plasma emmits its own light and RGB colour spectrum.
LCD depends on a backlight wich passes light through the pixels witch reduce your black level wich then fades out your colours.you hear about cinespeed, and 2ms or 0ms responce times on the larger lcd panels but all that is a a digital chip wich processes the image faster and creates ghosting.....
*edit* HD hockey with excellent cables on a 50" inch plasama is some SERIOUS awsome.
HD hockey with excellent cables on a 52" LCD is some SERIOUS crap. unless your want to breach the 5g mark.*txes, dlv, wrnty*
people who own lcds might read that and go..."you dont know shit, MY FUCKING TV LOOKS SICK AND IM THE MAN"....trust me, ive spent years compareing panels lcd, pdp's,mmd on different sources, cables, pwr conditioners side by side with crazy tweaky ISF gurus calibrating them...plasma always kills.
responce times: if you like to watch sports, hockey,or play really intensive video games and want a HUGE 50 plus screen.... Plasma is your best choice. plasmas have aboslutly NO lag time and the 'myth' of image burn in from video game consoles are really a non issue.
prices are reasonable now that obviously what ever panle you choose go with a 1080p. sales goofs will throw the '120hz' spec at you but BELEIVE ME, its nice to have but for now and the next 5 years or so its a useless spec and a marketing ploy.
in terms of brands:
for plasma it ends with panasonic.
for lcd:sony/samsung are made in the same facility, both are good. but i would personally spend my money on a sharp aqous....
i own a 50'' panasonic 1080i plasma in the living room and a 42" toshiba lcd in the bedroom. toshiba is good but the only reason i have it is cause toshiba gave one to me free as a sales bonus....
plasma was the first consumer flat panel. they droped at prices of 20-25 k for about a 42'' or so. everyone and THERE MOTHER were looking for anyexcuse to dog the technology and create a justification for not spending that amount of money for a panel....thats why there is STILL a stigma around the technology. but, any industry insider or av salesguy worth his salt will tell you 10 times over....46-60"..plasma is the best,..smaller size?...lcd.
i hope that helps and wasnt too confusing.
and purchase the warnty. some retailers are far better then others. this should be your deciding factor when chosing where to purchase your panel
