Japan's Matsushita to adopt Panasonic as sole corporate, product brand - report

TOKYO, Jan. 9, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Japan's Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, the world's largest consumer electronics maker, will adopt Panasonic (NYSE:MC) as its corporate and product brand name in a bid to enhance its profile on the global market, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported Thursday.

Matsushita currently has different product labels including Panasonic, National and Technics.

The product brands it carries, which are also different from its corporate name, have made it difficult for Matshushita to raise awareness about the company and its product line on the world market while rivals such as Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE) and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co have been able to capitalize on their single corporate and brand names to lift their profiles, NHK said.

Matsushita is scheduled to brief the press later Thursday on its updated business strategy.

I don't see that flying in this part of the world. Brand loyalty is such a big thing in North America. Especially when you're talking about a brand that's been the industry standard for some 30-odd years.
