I don't think it makes much of a difference in cost in the end after you've scraped off the fat, skin and bone. When I was a poor student I used to buy chicken with fat/skin/bone to save money but realized that after you put in the manual labour of scraping off the fat, skin and bone yourself, you're left with so little meat that you may as well have just buyed the chicken breast alone despite the added cost. I would have saved myself some time AND it would have probably ended up being about (if not the same) price.
...Not personally a big fan of chicken skin/fat but I used to make an awesome chicken soup with the chicken bones I used to salvage...
