i would suggest the sony if you need kindling for a campfire. otherwise go with your toshiba or friendly little mac (that is if your mac savvy, which i am not)

Forget the sony.

Basically your looking at toshibia or Mac. Depending on what you want to use it for.

I bought an Ibook three years ago for light internet surfing, email and word processing. It's still working great and I use it often.

Get a Lenovo Thinkpad. I have a T61p and I'll never go with anything else. I have used a Toshiba, HP, Acer and the Thinkpad totals them all. I spent around $400 on my warranty which covers everything for 3 years, even accidental spills and damages. I had my keyboard replaced twice in Bangkok both in under 2 hours, at no cost, because I took it to an IMB service center. If your not near a service center they will UPS out a truck next day with a box and have it back to you in 2-3 business days (I did this once). Their built like a tank as a portable business tool and still look dead sexy (in that pin stripe secretary sorta way). I packed mine with 3 gigs of ram, a second hard drive and a 2.2 duo Intel. Plays videogames and runs multiple heavy load applications with ease. I highly recommend going with a Thinkpad and paying for the warranty. IMB really takes care of you.

I would go for the Xseries if your looking for small.

what ever you do.... don't buy an hp notebook... you will regret it.

I would go with a Mac... The reason being is that they are using intel core duo technology and most if not all of there computers now. The windows xp "bootcamp" emulator is quite stable as well.
However with the multi media capabilities and stability you have with the mac's o/s, it will be smooth sailing.

btw, if your leaning towards a Thinkpad get it with Bluetooth. It comes in handy... and I can't stress enough PIMP OUT YOUR WARRANTY. worth a million in the end. I (personally) beat the shit out of my laptop, mostly spills [beer, gin/tonic, water, rum/coke, sprite, redbull etc], but IMB will replace ANY part no matter what if you get the right coverage. Just have to call it into HQ and play the "I don't know what happened, all of a sudden I woke up and my battery doesn't work" (even because it swam in a pool of spilled beer the night before). I actually had three keyboards replaced in under six months in Bangkok (spills), but accidently paid for the first one until I realised how to use the warranty call in system.

jenai can only hope to improve
the cheapest centrino laptop with wifi N or G is the best bet especially if it has a good dvd burner, all for under $1 G. I think FS has them for between $800 & 1200.

If it is under $750, it's an Intel dual core without centrino.

besides, an aircard from rogers or telus or bell are a bad buy even if it comes free with your renewed 2-yr cellphone contract! don't forget the West Palm Springs professional who's suing Verizon to not pay his $10G bill!

Last edited by jenai; Jul 12, 08 at 07:54 AM. Reason: there is a difference between cheap and expensive laptops: wireless G and/or N. an aircard does not do it!!!

Its running an intel processor, there is no emulation with bootcamp(besides a bios), its just a user friendly partitioning tool.
Parallels is using emulation and i love using it(no restarts)!

Toshibas and Lenovo/IBMs are about as good as it gets for PC laptops. Otherwise just get a mac. I've heard Acers are alright. HP/Compaq, Dell, Emachines, Sony are all shit, don't even bother.

I work with a major contractor that provides support for about 90% of the hp consumer and business line products. Over the course of 4 years a number of class action lawsuits have occured.... Simply because the quality of HP computers are absolutely shit. I see it all each and every day...

I have a mac book pro for home use and have a Lenovo think pad for work. While the Lenovo is the nicest built for windows laptop I've used, my MacBook Pro is by far way nicer for both MacOS and Windows. The only reason I got the Lenovo was because it was free otherwise I wouldn't waste my money on it.
