PETA References Bus Beheading in Ad

Full Article at the Globe & Mail

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. — An animal rights group has tried – and failed – to run a newspaper ad comparing the beheading of a passenger on a Greyhound bus last week to the treatment of animals by the meat industry.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, said on its website it would run the ad in the Portage la Prairie Daily Graphic.

However, city editor Tara Seel said the newspaper had no intention of running the ad, which uses imagery of “an innocent victim's throat” being cut, in reference to the slaughter of cows, chickens and pigs on factory farms.

“His struggles and cries are ignored ... the man with the knife shows no emotion ... the victim is slaughtered and his head cut off ... his flesh is eaten,” reads the ad, which is posted on the website.

“If this ad leaves a bad taste in your mouth, please give a thought to what sensitive animals think and feel when they come to the end of their frightening journey and see, hear and smell the slaughterhouse.”

Ms. Seel would not specify reasons for why the newspaper was choosing not to run the ad, except to say it wasn't something they wanted to do. She noted the newspaper had been inundated with calls from other media since the posting to the PETA website.

“Like human victims, animals in slaughterhouses experience terror when they are attacked by a knife-wielding assailant,” Lindsay Rajt of PETA said in a news release. “We are challenging everyone who is rightly horrified by this crime to look into their hearts and consider leaving violence off their dinner plates.”

Ms. Rajt said the ad was intended to be shocking and is meant to spur people to think about the terror and pain experienced by animals who are raised and killed for food.
What an ugly thing to do to the family of the bus beheading murder victim. How callous a human being do you have to be to announce to the world that somebody's kid (seriously, he was just 22) was slaughtered like an animal, and to do it for personal political gain is outright disgusting. For SHAME.

the meat industry capatalizes on death

and now PETA is trying to copy their business model

what a bunch of tards, they´re no better now, just on a smaller scale

and comparing sustance through meat to senseless violence is rediculous

true but to what extent. this is largely up for debate.
personally i like the idea of a food chain and if i am high enough on the food chain to choose what i want to eat and when i want to eat it and what type of wine to go with, then ill do that.
other animals are allowed to be selective of what they eat, we just do it more efficiently. but ill bet there is no equivalent to PETA in the shark world.

then again im biased as my whole heritage is like 4 generations of ranching on the prairies (with a little bit of bootleggin thrown in in the pro-hib days), and ive probably offed a good couple thousand animals for sport and/or food in my life.... so meh.

Nah, I'm still of the belief that humans are animals, just like everything else. It's pure egotism that makes us think we're better.

Higher on the food chain, maybe, but that's hardly a human construct.

not really.

if we're not animals then what are we? plants? 5th dimensional beings trapped in the 3rd and 4th dimension? alien spawn? actually, that still would not definitively separate us from animals. aliens would probably be classified as animals as well.

what separates us? the extent which we use tools and/or alter the environment around us? that we have higher brain functions or complex emotions (which is totally debatable and science is showing it to be false)? i'm sorry but that's not what defines something as an animal.

it's simply a fact that very few people like to acknowledge.

exactly. and it makes a wonderful debate/discussion.

biolgically, homo sapiens are animals.

human beings are a something a little different.

the great defining schism between human beings and the animal world is that we are driven by freewill...rather then instinct.

it is our free will wich allows us to comprehend the afterlife, love, spirituality ect.

BUT, on the other side there are many documented cases of 'ferral' human beings wich have no concept of freewill or human spirituality. they are completely driven by instinct.

as desmond morris puts it,were just 'naked apes'

rights activists, like PETA, who feel they need to push the boundaries of excess to get their message across can become pretty dangerous. as small of an example as it maybe, on Davie when they had the KFC cluckers protesting outside, I walked out with a small box of chicken fries on my way home and nearly had them knocked of my hands by a girl royally in my face over my purchase. it was a stones throw away from assault had I not ignored her.

I believe it is safe to assume that nobody outside of PETA takes anything they say seriously...

... but dicks also fuck assholes....

PETA are such BS. Hypocrites all of them. I pretty much rank them right next to Scientologists for "Brainwashed fuckwads not really doing anything to further the agenda they preach, which is questionable on their best points"

Penn & Teller did a kickass episode of Bullshit on them. I recommend everybody watch it.

I eat carcass. You know why? Because that's what my body was made to do. If PETA has a problem they can take it up with the God who designed me this way.

I'm not surprised by this. Usualy the message from said ads refers to the killing of the innocent... Which animals are indeed innocent. PETA has some intense and radical ways to get their point accross... their marketing campaign tactics are borrowed from those of the meat and cigarrette industry. The roumour of saying that PETA may print an ad like this is brilliant. They just like to stir the pot and do it extremely well. Just like the McDonald's ads "Big mac's,,, they have people talking" PETA just eats that shit up (not litterally) and do the same right back. Its a war of words to create debate. Not that I agree with most of what PETA does... they've always been a bunch of punks.

Ingrid Newkirk (PETA CEO and co-founder) is definetely a cooky-crazy gal. When she dies she's going to have a BBQ with her on the menu just too see if people are like "wow that smells tantelizing" just to create more intense and radical debate which in the long run will just end up dividing and narrowing points of view as oppose to conjoining and broadening prespective.

I'd love to have a Newkirk Burger. It'd be like Stranger In A Strange Land.

Word. She got the nod from PETA once KFC Canada started offering meat free alternatives. Personally it sends mixed messages.

Using celeberties to sell their propaganda is a good way to get the word out there. The warm sound of Alec Baldwins voice in their doc is highly inspiring lol.
