I also think it's odd to criticize something that your friends obviously enjoy. Like, when I have friend who enjoys doing stuff that I think i'd dislike doing, I don't criticize them for it.
To me, Facebook is very similar to fnk. It's just a bit more voyeuristic in nature. I spend time on both sites to kill time, interact with friends, exchange ideas, look at pictures, and find out about events that are happening around the city. It's like one stop shopping. I find that Facebook is also great for networking (career).
I don't even mind the advertising. In fact, it can be quite useful. My friend found a photographer that she's using for engagement photos through an ad on Facebook.

If only I spent as much energy posting my whole two sentences as people spent in refuting them, maybe I wouldn't view it as much of a cult.
