In the case they are at complete odds, reason.
reason is better to fall back on because you are looking at something from a perspective that lacks emotion- which imo can really cloud my judgment at times. your instincts don't always coincide with lessons learned from mistakes you've made in the past and going on one's 'gut instinct' can cause some people to repeat the same mistakes time and time again. |

instinct is the deeply rooted program within the creature that dwells
hunter/gatherer, food , sex , reptile brain reason is our innacurrate notion that we've ever evolved from that state in the first place, we're still just reaching for desire [kabbalah]the difference between the two is the desire to recieve, or better yet just plain ol' desire as humans we are basically the only animals on earth whom differ from the instinctual program based on a calculation of desire example: you go through the process of a risky surgery to cure yourself from a potential debilitation but try taking your pet to the vet and watch them squirm, they don't have the capacity to calculate, they don't reason all we're doing here is calculating the pleasure to pain ratio, and if we are at a higher outcome of pleasure, we will endure pain for the final outcome in fact this is pretty much how every decision we make comes into fruition, think about it ... ok don't say sadomasochism because that's a reversed polarity, everything else pretty much falls into place here[/kabbalah] desire is suffering, desire is instinctual, and sensation is the animal mind, learn to meditate blah blah blah and all that jazz =D |

I guess that sometimes you can't always just expect reason to get you places. Sometimes you have to take a risk and embrace the consequences as part of the lesson. It's good to plan to some extent, but in life, you can't control everything. In fact, sometimes the change you want in life comes only from making the most instinctive decisions.

that gut instinct is more your mushy feelings getting in the way of reason and not so much an actual instinct. |

some people's problem is that they over think things. and their reason gets diluted by possibilities that are a little far out. Then that reasoning becomes 'truth' and it can steer a person clear of anything that resembles that situation down the road.
