my godsister is running for municipal council on vancouver island and gave some pretty good advice about voting effectively @ the municipal level. a lot of people might know this, but it's good to share :)
"Hello municipal voters and advocates of intelligent democratic practice. Did you know?: When you vote for municipal council members in the upcoming election (November 15th 2008) you DO NOT have to use all of your votes. If you have a total of 6 candidates you can select and 8 names to choose from on your ballot and you only really truly believe in/like/trust/want/know 3 of them - only vote for the 3!!!! Every vote you cast for a candidate you feel luke warm about takes strength away from the votes you make for candidates that you believe in and are excited about. Those luke warm/"don't care" votes add numbers to luke warm (read: lame) candidates - and then the exceptional and often new candidates suffer. This is called 'plumping' your ballot. It is legal and it is effective. Use your votes whole heartedly and ONLY for the candidates that speak for and act on the issues you care about. If we all do this you will be surprised how much change is possible at the municipal level." if you'd like to join her fbook group or spread the word: Plump Your Ballot Baby! YouTube - Peter Ladner's first week in office
what the hell was he thinking when he said this? so lacking in judgement and leadership IMO. |

I wonder how much of it is federal and provincial law though? I'm pretty sure that liquor laws are provincial territory. if this is your big concern though it was COPE/Vison that first allowed 4am openings. regardless though with the Olympics coming I expect a major make over of what's allowed. after all before Expo bars and liquor stores were not allowed to open on Sundays. |
