Anyone should be able to give their thoughts on this, who knows this transit action could eventually hit the whole city.
I dont think its legit to compare this fee to taxes, EI, or your CPP. Why? Because those work like insurance, plus EVERY tax payer puts in a % of their income. Not a fixed fee. This fee isnt like the other fee's we pay as students. Ive always been annoyed at the $10 newspaper fee that I never read, but heck its $10. As for the other services, again it works like insurance and they're there to help towards your learning. Again its not just the fee, but the price of the fee. All the fees together at my school come to about $75. Many of them are based on how many credits you take, so its like a % system. But then add the Upass $126. Suddenly im paying $200 in fees, more than double!!! This is why im outraged. This fee has nothing to do with school. Traffic is something that effects EVERYONE. If the fee was minimal, I wouldn't care. If the fee came out of carbon tax, I wouldn't care. If they increased pay parking I wouldn't care. But pay parking is already chipping into this and students who drive are now expected to pay for both! Is there a hidden message in all of this? Am I expected to sell my car? Are students not allowed to have cars? But the rest of the faculty and people who commute everyday can? -someone please justify this for me Last edited by R Wellbelove; Nov 20, 08 at 05:52 PM. |

You guys are helping pay for an environmentally friendly service that is ultimately helping out several students.
It's a shame that everyone has to pay for it but if that's the only way to make it happen then you should feel good about contributing to it. It's unfair that we have to pay such ridiculous tuition fees when students in Europe have their school payed for but we know that it will benefit us in the long run, this service will benefit others and the environment so try to keep that in perspective. |

Seeing as Translink is >60% subsidized, aren't we already?

If it helped people less fortunate than myself access reasonably priced transportation I would feel happy.

Both of us pay into this. But because im a student I have to pay an added $126, unlike you. So no you're not.
Then help pay for a share of my fee! Last edited by R Wellbelove; Nov 20, 08 at 09:33 PM. |

And since we subsidize a large portion of Translink as taxpayers, I pointed out that we are already forced. The fact that you willingly joined a group that democratically mandated a $20/month further subsidization doesn't make the above statement false. If you want to know how I personally feel, I would suggest that it should be raised to 100% to support aggressive expansion. If you feel that you are unable to cover the cost I'm sure they also offer subsidies for poor, starving, students. Or just figure out how to take the bus 6 times a month instead of driving, then you'll have recouped your losses. You have do decide, are you poor, or are you rich? |

And yes, you have to pay an extra ~$30/month, because you're a student. You also have to pay fees to the Canadian Federation of Students, your own student society, you also help subsidize the special-interest groups found on campus. Want to complain about all those expenses too? Because frankly they cost about as much as the transit fee, despite the fact that very few students (relatively) actually use those services. |
