Does Jesus hate yoga?

I have a friend who is a devoted Christian. She thinks that yoga goes against Christian belief.

I would have thought that God would be down with exercise and inner peace.

Your thoughts?

She kind of seized up and said she didn't want to talk about it. I'm pretty sure she fears practising yoga is a sin. She gets that way whenever someone asks me about the Buddhist mantra on my neck too.

Definitely one of those people who has never questioned their faith and as a result, is terrified of anything that diverges from the way she was raised.

Basically, when she said she had been sad, getting sick a lot, and that her back was hurting her, I suggested trying out yoga. She told me that true Christians don't practice it, but didn't go into detail.

I realize it originated in Hinduism, but it's evolved from that. I'm just curious if it is actually taught in church that yoga is wrong.

ive been christian all my life and ive never been told such nonsense by anyone...
my grandma used to tell me meditation was evil too because "you should always be thinking about god, not clearing your thoughts"

then i suggested that prayer could be consitered a form of meditation, and also added im sure we arent supposed to be thinking about god while we are having sex.

she shut up pretty quick.

yeah there's a lot of different types of yoga. some of it is practiced for spirutal reasons and ties in all sorts of spiritual elements, some of it focuses on things like lengthening and strengthening the spine (ie purely physical) . You do not meditate in every single yoga class, nor do you 'om' (but it really adds to the fun if you do).

I love ignants! They totally love to research things before forming opinions.

Depends on your interpretation of Jesus. My mum is a born-again christian, and she still practices yoga (fixed her back whereas over a decade of chiropractic help did nothing for her), tarot cards (has as long as I've known her), runestones, angel cards, astrology, etc. etc. etc.

The important part is community. Why do so many Christians forget that?

Lets be honest, people will fear anything, and often blame it on anything.

It must be scary to be one of those uber weird christians though, having to live in fear that somewhere out there someone is having a good time.

I once knew a deeply christian family in school.. the mother wouldnt allow chewing gum in her house as it "was insulting her faith"

Still have no idea what that meant, but you should have seen her eyes when she saw me with some .. I was sent home.. haha

Actually she "smelled" the grape gum from the other room and came charging in. hahah

What you need to be a member of the Roman Catholic Church:
- Baptism
- Confirmation

Everything else is window dressing.
