i agree its a weird time to fire him, but i can see the reasons:

-rfa mishandling this year, where he didn't get offer sheets out on time and had to scramble to sign a bunch of players to probably more than their offers (this probably was the "last straw")
-huet, hossa, sopel and campbell contracts will completely cripple team after this season cap-wise, they WILL lose at least 1, probably 2 of these core guys: KANE, TOEWS, KEITH
-lol what goaltending

they will have a great team this year, but the chicago team that takes the ice in 2010-2011 will be weaker because of his actions

I'd say O'Brien should be worried about a trade right about now. We're over the cap mainly due to acquiring three decent blueline players.

O'Brien is sub-par at the best of times, and his 1.6 million salary is way too much for someone like him, and I was convinced that management was drunk during this decision, or was just so scared of losing any defencemen they went way too high.

I'll agree he adds some toughness, but at what cost?

He takes a lot of really dumb penalties. I'm sorry but 200 penalty minutes in a season is ridiculous. Especially when so many of them are just dumb penalties.

Defensively he's alright, not great, but not horrible.

Offensively he's useless, I know he's a defenseman but still.

So you've got tough guy, who's a penalty magnet, that's so-so in the defense department. I don't think he's worth 1.6.

If he was at 1 mil, I wouldn't care so much. But he's taking a chunk of the cap I think could be used elsewhere.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Demitra may be on LTI and off the books for a good chunk of the season, and once guys like Nycholat and Rome are waived and sent down to Manitoba I'd bet we just make it under. My bet is that we only see a trade if Sundin decides to play another year, although GM MG keeps his cards pretty close to his chest, so who knows really...

I'm really impressed with Gillis.

Replacing the barbara with Raycroft is something that's getting over looked. Don't forget about Hodgson and a big pickup for Samuelson. I do agree that Obrien and Pyatt are at risk to be moved. I hope wellwood, kesler and burrows have consecutive successful years. And the Sedin's do not disappoint.

This all adds up to a very entertaining season for us.

PS. I doubt sundin will play with us next year.

I've got mixed feelings about this to be honest... But I'm just not a fan of decade long contracts.

That being said, this season is looking great. Basically ripping of the sharks, and adding schnider have made me quite pleased with the new roster.

This Season's schedule is posted too if you are interested. I feel bad for Terrace BC. They win hockeyville, and the team they get to watch is the islanders...
