sr20det engine itself you could find for around 2500-3500 canadian (2500 is a very good deal, 3000 avg though) and installation 500-1000 as long as he has a 91-94 instead of 89/90 since the 89/90 have issues with the power steering shit. If i swap engines i need a buncha shit from a 91-94 for the steering. not expensive shit...just the lil metal tube dealies
im tired from work so i dont remmeber what they are called

SR20DET is **FAR** from rare.
89/90 180sx = CA18DET (i think like 170hp, can also take about 15lbs boost putting it to 230hp/220ftlbs)
91-newest 180sx = SR20DET
S13 Silvia K = SR20DET
S14 Silvia K = SR20DET with VVT for newer models
S15 Silvia = 250HP 6spd SR20DET

Most of those cars are still being sold in Japan, malasia, and tons of other countries. Cheapest engines you will find from malasia (and buy cheapest i mean lowest priced)

89/90 240sx comes with 140hp/155ftlb SOHC engine (KA24E)
91-98 Comes with 155hp DOHC engine KA24DE
all 94 240sx's were convertibles.
Turbo kits are available for all the KA engines at roughly the same price as an SR20DET motor is, so if you find a low km engine, you're better off turboing that and benefiting from the higher displacement and torque. 7lbs boost is very safe on stock fuel systems (well, not bone stock...you'd need at least some cheap vortech FMU or something but thats like what? 80 bux?) and will put you at around 240hp to the rear wheels in the DOHC engine. A couple modifications to fuel system and you will safely be able to run 15+ lbs on the KA as well. I've seen SOHC 240's last for as long as 400,000km wihtout needing a rebuild, and still running strong.

oh yeah, and thats a reasonable price for an S14. if you're gonna go with an S14, 97/98 has much nicer headlights. You might be able to get one cheaper if you find one with a blown engine or really high km, which wont really matter since you'd be putting in an SR and probably upgrading suspension. I have f/r Suspension Techniques sway-bars and tokico struts and springs with 215 tires, and it rolls through corners like a lotus.

Oh yeah, and if you wanna throw an SR20DET into a civic, theres actually a FWD sr20det "bluebird" or something like that. I have no idea what car its out of. I know the NX2000's come with a FWD non-turbo SR20DE engine, but not many of the parts are interchangable with SR20DET engine. I'm just guessing, but i would think that the bluebird engine is a NX2000 engine but built with a turbo. I think it's cheaper. Also, Redtop sr20det engines are to be avoided as they have been replaced with the blacktops and have a higher chance of having been sitting in a junkyard for a while before being.

ive seen nx2000's on the internet with that bluebrid motor swap doen to them.

but still its a fuckin civic, plus the engine mountainds hood and shit would all have to be fabricated, it would be easier to swap a b18c1 from an integra gsr and turbocharge it.

specialkonrd: if he's talkin bout putting it into a civic, ALL b series are bolt-ons.

my suggestion, although not quite what he's talking bout...
5g hatch (92-95) 5k
b18c1 gsr 4.5-5k
you'd have a mid 14sec ride with no engine mods to it... not bad
10k left for...suspension/kit/wheels/engine which ever he prefers...actually knock 2k off that 10k, your gonna wanna buy INSURANCE!

just a note on buying new cars. depreciation sucks ass, and also most people would be making payments...so seeing how he's supposed to pay his parents back, i don't think payments/insurance/gas would be that good. insurance/gas would already be bad enough.
my view on buying new is that i'm only gonna make payments if it's like a 35k car and i'm putting like 20k down. just me though...

yeah but bone stock it would be faster then most cars on the road, especially modified civics, even ones with engine swaps...secondly itsa NEW car, and given the choice between a new car and a used, always go with new
