goths...

my bf and i were just talkin aboutthis today and i wanna see wut u guys think of the whole thing..

goths... they all claim to be "individuals" and yet they dress like every other goth. just because they may be a minority group it doesnt mean theyre individuals. like, i dont think ppl even know a thing about being gothic, its not just the costume and makeup, theres a certain lifestyle and characteristic that actual goths live to.
i find it funny when kids say "this is the true me, i'm being myself". but really, i dont think they understand wut it means to be goth. i dont think its something that u can just one day be like, ok i've changed.
to me, they just choose to dress that way because they really cant find themselves or they dont think they "fit in" with other ppl so they decide to join that certain group of ppl, cuz with them, if u dress that way, you are accepted into their group.

"i'm a goth, i'm an individual, and i'm not conforming"
but we all dress the same, and our 'beliefs' are based on our clothing. hmm sounds kinda weak if u ask me.

Nowadays, when I think about goth, I only picture black clothes and dark makeup because it's so wrongly used by a lot of people. They claim that's who they are, and that it's expressing their individuality when all they achieve is a different physical appearance.

But had it been a couple of years ago, I would've thought of goth as a lifestyle, art, and Medieval times. I guess I still do, but it's kind of hard to see it that way now that people dress as goths only to give off the impression that "they're so much different from us."

So does a true individual go naked? Goths and punks and skaters and so on are different from the mainstream - and that to them is showing their individuality.
Everyone wears clothes, what clothes you wear are your choice. You choose what group you want to be visually associated with. Yes, goths buy inot their own culture, but that is one thats tands out from the rest - they are drawing attention to themselves - making a statement against the society that surrounds them - that they do not want be (or are not ready to be) a part of it
I don't know why you think they dress like that because they don't fit in - don't fit in with who? They fit in with one another. That could be argued about anyone who isn't a part of the 'majority' - ravers are traditionlly a group of people who are different - many ravers are attracted to the so-called accepting rave culture because they didn't feel accepted in their high schools or communitites or whatever. MAny ravers were once goths or other alternative types. They are trying to find themselves and use clothing to try and do it. We all find ourselves in different ways
Most goths won't be goths forever - it's the young being young. Its not the prettiest look I've ever seen - but neither is young girls with low cut tops and too much lipstick, or young suburban G-types
Youth rebel - that's a part of the fun of being young! I am my parent's worst nightmare..it's what it is all about

^ I agree 100% with Jingles. very well said.
The original post made can apply to many different people in many different groups. It was also grossly generalized to make it sound like all 'goths" motives are the same. Sometimes that IS who the person is, at the moment. It usually doesn't last long, but we all go through phases. They may look alike eachother, and alot of the time people turn "goth" and go overboard. Woe is me, I want to die, i hate the world, etc etc. But this happens in all scenes. You have your super hoochie try hards, your tacky gangster wannabes, and so on. Maybe its the fact that alot of people who may dress or partake in the gothic lifestyle make sucha big point about being an individual, then end up looking similar to eachother, but it happens all the time in every group. You have to give some of them credit for having the balls it takes To be different, and even if they are going to look alike, at least they aren't a mainstream clone. Whose population is alot larger than those of an "alternative" once.

It might have been wisest to state that earlier as your comment sounds naive without it.

I agree, I don't think you should judge someone into a subculture untill you do know them.
It's easy to place them into a subculture just by looks but thats not always accurate.

i dunno really.. make your own clothes??
i jsut find it very contradicting wen sumone claims to be an individual but then jsut copy others (not just clothes... make up, attitude, music they listen to, and so on...)

well alotta "goths" make their own clothes and jewelry..and also its just the same with candy kids who claim ta be individuals..they make their own clothes to..but they are still just a group of a subculture..clothes dont make a person an individual its who the person is that makes them an individual
