This one is for anyone who thinks people here are grammar nazis.

Go pick up Strunk & White's The Elements of Style and rethink the whole Grammar Nazi thing. Here's a couple of examples from Chapter IV: Words and Expressions Commonly Misused

Quote:
Clever Note that the word means one thing when applied to people, another when applied to horses. A clever horse is a good-natured one, not an ingenious one.

Contact As a transitive verb, the word is vague and self-important. Do not contact people; get in touch with them, look them up, phone them, find them, or meet them.

Can Means "am (is, are) able." Not to be used as a substitute for may.

Disinterested Means "impartial." Do not confuse it with uninterested, which means "not interested in."

Loan A noun. As a verb, prefer lend.

Most Not to be used for almost in formal composition.
most everybody - almost everybody
most all the time - almost all the time

Regretful Sometimes carelessly used for regrettable: "The mixup was due to a rergretful breakdown in communications."

Student body Nine times out of ten a needless and awkward expression, meaning no more than the simple word students.
a member of the student body - a student
popular with the student body - liked by the students

Thanking you in advance This sounds as if the writer meant, "It will not be worth my while to write to you again." In making your request, write "Will you please," or "I shall be obliged." Then, later, if you feel moved to do so, or if the circumstances call for it, write a letter of acknowledgement.

The foreseeable future A cliche, and a fuzzy one. How much of the future is forseeable? Ten minutes? Ten years? Any of it? By whom is it forseeable? Seers? Experts? Everybody?

The truth is. . . . The fact is. . . . A bad beginning for a sentence. If you feel you are possessed of the truth, or of the fact, simply state it. Do not give it advance billing.

Thrust This showy noun, suggestive of power, hinting of sex, is the darling of executives, politicos, and speechwriters. Use it sparingly. Save it for specific application.
Be happy we only jump on your ass for the their/there/they're discrimination.

PS: I myself am usually guilty of a lot of the stuff Stunk and White jump on you for. So no need to feel so bad. But seriously. I'm making an active effort to learn the rules of grammar and style, the least you could do is learn that the word "you" is more than a single letter.

This is true.

The periods here were more to emphasize the pause. Just imagine me saying "But seriously" with a look. It just seems like the comma just doesn't do.

And that's my lame excuse.

The usage of can/may was drilled into my head so many times by my acting teacher.
"Hey Mr. Vint, can I _____ ?"
He would always answer with a "yes" and a blank stare. "Oh, would you like to? Well then yes you MAY".

One English lesson I'll never forget was when we learned the difference between Lie and Lay. We had a sub teacher for the last couple of classes before finals in Grade 10. It sounded something like this:

"Lay is transitive. You have to lay something. Like, I laid the pencil on the table.... What's everybody laughing at?"

Good times, good times.

that's cool though, at least you learned it.
meanwhile here, i don't know if it was the classes i was in, or all the classes, but i didn't learn that much in english. the thing they concentrated on so badly was essays [you know, the 5 paragraph ones. oi.] and that was about it. funny thing was, whenever i asked questions about things all i got in response was "you should already know this stuff from previous grades". i could really use some lessons :\ damn school.
