The term 'Jungle' was used first, they started calling it 'drum & bass' around the mid ninties when it started getting more media attention and needed a more politically correct name. 'The word 'Jungle' was thought to carry racist connotations.

Lennie De Ice's "We Are IE" and Leviticus' "The Burial" are a couple of other tunes considered to be amongst the first to be classifiable as 'jungle', as they were driven by the bassline instead of the 4-to-the-floor kick drum that underpinned most hardcore rave tracks of that time. Later came the ragga/dancehall elements and the dark distorted basslines that set it firmly apart from hardcore as it's own distinct scene & genre.
