The scene seems to work in giant circles. It can be super busy and flourishing for 2 years, and almost non-existant for the next two. Right now, I believe the scene is getting bigger. But that doesn't explain if it is or is not mainstream.

I think that everyone is constantly going through something new and not everyone encounters the rave scene for at the same time. There are always micro-cultures within the rave scene, and your view on how 'mainstream' the scene is really depends on how 'in the know' you are. Some people out there may never hear about Spooky or Doomsnight, and when they do, it's still an underground rave for them. Until they go, and shed some light on their perspective.

But as soon as people try, they go at raves hard for like a couple of years, get jaded, and go once every now and again. love for music and drugs aside, raves are like giant all night luau where people with common interests get together. So if this shit is new to you, no, it's not mainstream at the moment like it was in 1999 & 2000 (like dabbler mentioned). But, when it does pick up again, you'll see the doubters, the supporters, the media, the hype and shit talking...

i'm pretty new to the rave scene still but i'm loving it. i love that trance and dnb or jungle is popping up everywhere now. i ahve friends who ahted elctronica and refused to listen to it and once i started bring them out they have all changed they styles a bit. i think it shouldn't really matter the underground feeling of course is way more fun but i really don't mind legal raves it's almost comforting to know theres sober people running around making sure if i hit the floor and pass out they aren't going to let me die. it still has a good feel to it as far as i'm concerned. as long as the music doesn't get any more mainstream.

Joce: It will, and there's nothing you can do about it. Each genre of EDM seems to have its own "Oldschool" that is so much better than the stuff coming out now. Frankly, though, I've been rather impressed with the music that's been coming out lately. It seems that the mainstreamness of EDM has no bearing on it, though, as raves hit "Mainstream" a while ago (Wasn't there an episode of Dawson's Creek where they all went to a rave 4 years ago?... And all they ever seemed to play was Block Rockin' Beats...)

It's not that the mainstream has made raves suck. Even when they started, the people that went to them are the masses... the vibe of the party depends more on how much fun people are having than how underground it is, right? Seems few people have been able to make that distinction.... But bigger isn't necessarily always worse. Shambhala had ~10,000 people at it and it was a FAR cooler vibe than anything the Plaza of Nations has ever been able to conjure.

it was "mainstream" back in 2000/01, well give or take. It was a "trend" back then. It is hardly mainstream now imo.
