what book did you just finish?
i know we have a 'what book are you reading now' thread, but in this one list the book you just finished and what you thought about it (whether you would recommend it or not, etc...)
i just finished Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence by Robert M. Pirsig. this is a good book if you are into philosophy at all. it was written in the 60/70's and contains a lot of counterculture ideas (or so i gathered from it). unfortunatlely i lost the book when i was reading it in July and just recently got it back and finished it so it was a little strange trying to jump back into the storyline after six months, but i got there. the book blends philosophy and a fictional story quite well together. sort of like Sophie's World only the philosophical teachings are always interwoven into the story whereas in Sophie's World they were set apart. |

Just finishing 'Glue' by Irvine Welsh, which expands further on the lives of some of the characters established in 'Trainspotting' and 'Porno'. Fine dark comedy / tragedy concerning the tribulations of 4 boys growing up in the schemes of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Before that i read 'The Green Brain' by Frank Herbert (author of 'Dune' series), a very well written (although short) story set in the future, where certain nations have attempted to eradicate all insect life, with disasterous consequences. |

Americana by Don DeLillo
really great book, his first novel too. if you like Bret Easton Ellis then you'll probably like Don DeLillo too, as it seems that Ellis got a lot of inspiration from DeLillo's writing style. he has a very poetic and flowy style of writing his descriptions, and his dialogue is sharp and witty, which i like. some descriptions were a little lengthy and i lost interest at some points, but he always gained it back. |

just finished:
Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser heard a lot about this book, watched Supersize Me and decided that i wanted to read this book as well. i've already stopped eating fast food, but man, if i was still eating it...this book would have made me stop. you can tell this guy did an incredible ammount of research...just look at the notes at the end of the book, they're like a hundred pages long. he relates fast food to the decline in the agriculture business, westernization of foreign countries, illegal immigrant problems, rises in worker injuries, food poisonings with E. Coli and other bacteria, and of course, people just getting too damn fat. very convincing arguments. |

"Heavier Than Heaven"
It's a biography of Kurt Cobain , taken from over 400 interviews conducted with people that knew him well as well as his personal journals. If you had any interest in Nirvana , and the stories behind the songs , you really need to read this. I've read pretty much everything to do with nirvana over the years , but this book left nothing unanswered. If you read it keep in mind that it was published by Courtney Loves publishing house, so it might be a little biased. It's hard to respect anything about KC besides his music, the guy was a "stain". |
