The 2010 Olympics Logo
After the unveiling of the logo for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics I was curious to see what everyone thought of it.
Personally, I don't like it very much. It's supposed to represent both our province and the country and all it represents in my opinion is the native culture. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to slag on the natives, but how does it represent ALL of us? There is so much more to BC and Canada than the natives... if they really wanted to portray us properly the logo could have been more multicultural in origin. I guess it's not like I had any ideas for the logo myself but still, not a good choice IMO. |

I might be wrong , but i actually think that is an inuit symbol of some sort....or maybe a 3 year olds rendition of the stay -puffed-marshmallow man?
I hope vancouver puts more thought into the games themselves than they did on that logo. |

^I know that they took artists submissions from the public and had a $25000 prize associated with it. I honestly don't think that the first nations groups would have had a say in it. If they did I defintely don't think it's right because as I said there is more to our society than just them.
I heard that there was a logo idea being thrown around that had a circle made up of symbols representing all sorts of different cultures present in Canadian society. It was basically a logo made up of other logos.... maybe they thought it was just too much and went with simple yet UGLY. |

I would have thrown some random simple squiggles on a piece of paper for that amount of scratch possibly coming my way. Which really, just shows how corrupt our way of thinking is. "Hey! No one will want to be involved with creating a logo simply for the pride factor alone... So lets heap out a massive cash reward!" And still, what do we get. Simple yet ugly. More DA thinking: Agreed that the first First Nations groups may not be directly involved with the logo, (even though I still think it might have been picked to make them happy/keep them quiet) it would make sense that they would have some say in the events...(their land etc etc) And moreover, I think that their heritge is going to play a huge part in the opening/closing of the games, simply because of the location (BC i mean). Not that it shouldn't, I just think that we should be focused on all the aspects of who we are as a people. Together we are stronger....Right? |

^Can you imagine the opening of the games if they decided to go straight up multicultural? You'd have a chinese dragon flying around a totem pole while East Indian women danced to cheesy bhangra music. Hell that'd only be one portion... we still have the japanese, greeks, polaks, french, ukrainians, italians etc...

hahaha. Key words being "in the paper" A)I dont think anyone would admit to disliking it if the paper asked them. they don't want to get hated on. (driving down the street and they pull up to a red light... person one car over rolls down their window "HEY! you're the guy that didn't like the 2010 logo! I HOPE YOU GO TO HELL!") B)If they did speak truthfully and say that they didn't like it, I don't think the paper would print it anyways. bad publicity for the games, could further other people to dislike it as well... etc etc. a tad fascist, but possible. |

Considering the logo is seen EVERYWHERE before, during and after the games I think they should have done a much better job. Its on flags, backpacks, tv, magazines, mugs, watches ect ect, why couldnt they make it something that is somewhat nice and interesting to look at? The cultural aspect doesn't bother me too much, or atleast not as much as the severe lack of creativity.I give it two thumbs DOWN:n::n:.

speaking of opening ceremonies, I thought the opening Barcelona one was the best. Does anyone remember how the whole stadium was dark, save for camera flashes and how that archer shot a flaming arrow from one end to hit the olympic torch?

I think the original logo is much better. I like the big red maple-leaf in the sky and how they express the mountains and the sea near the bottom. I can understand why we would use that inuit styled logo, because of Canada's heritage and all, but like Scarface said, it looks like some kid drew it. I would've disagreed if they woulda used a heida styled whale pic also.
I think the logo should focus more on explaining how vancouver is great because of the acceptance of such a huge mix of culture; Rather than the culture someone came and took. Maybe a totem pole would have been better, but a totem pole with a diverse array of spiritual animals or shapes from around the world (drawn in a native style to really drive the point home) :^) |

So our Olympic games has a northern First Nations Symbol!!! Ummmm what does this have to do with Vancouver? NOTHING! However the symbol does bring in some sense of Canada. A better choice to represent west coast Canada would have been a Orca whale.
A Haida symbol better suits West Coast Canada, opposed to a Inuit one. Oh well no one thought of that I guess. Smell fishy? Last edited by TheCooker; Apr 24, 05 at 12:21 PM. |

If you recognise the symbolism of the Inuit "inukshuk", i think it was a good , if humble choice for a logo, even tho it is kinda ugly. I usually hate olympic ring color schemes, and I'm not that into the olympics or anything. Read about what the symbol means:
http://www.sulis.net/inukshuk.htm More DA thinking: Agreed that the first First Nations groups may not be directly involved with the logo, (even though I still think it might have been picked to make them happy/keep them quiet) it would make sense that they would have some say in the events...(their land etc etc) And moreover, I think that their heritge is going to play a huge part in the opening/closing of the games, simply because of the location (BC i mean). Not that it shouldn't, I just think that we should be focused on all the aspects of who we are as a people. Together we are stronger....Right? And what kinda statement is this??!! ^^ A bit misinformed, perhaps heavily biased - but expected, sadly enough. Besides the symbolism of the logo, it acknowledges the history and other areas of Canada that are less visited or visible, the Arctic & northern B.C specifically, just more exposure to the the land we live in, ya think? Overall, the sentiments i hear are a bit funny, if curious. Why feel confused or hesitant when presented with a well meaning Inuit symbol? You dont' have to be Inuit to get it. I'm sure there's more to this bias, huh? |

But I guess no matter how many complaints we have that's not gonna change the new symbol. Maybe it's petition time? hehe |

Nah a petition is too much work! The symbols is close enough I guess. After comparing our 2010 symbol to symbols in past games. I appreciate it more. There is a stone inuit symbol at English Bay, that I lived across the street from. Everytime I see our symbol now I'll remember chillin down at the beach, smoking a little reefer and comtemplating climbing it. |
