sometimes i tip ridiculous amounts, like 10 bucks for a 45 dollar meal.. depends on how good my server is. and no i don't care about if they're good looking etc. if they're funny and not annoying = good tip
it always depends on how satisfied i am. sometimes ive given a dollar tip for a meal because i was disgusted with the service. |

ok this thread is boring, not a single person against tipping
why do we tip again? the majority of servers are young people with disposable incomes, trying to slut up your guilt factor to donate more money for buying clothes and drinks over their student loan. maybe i'm going to the wrong places, but how often do you see the 40 year old single mom waitress anymore? the whole idea seems like an affirmative action plan gone wrong, misplaced social welfare. if servers actually deserved more, lets be truthful here, wouldnt they be paid more? if the tip is a concept used to encourage good service, what happened to just firing people that dont do their job well? how did the customer get roped into this evaluation flowchart? how am i supposed to judge someone on their ability to transcribe two sentences, then move warm objects 20 feet? tips just obfuscate their performance because the money is pooled between all servers anyways. i think a better system would to factor whatever 'commission' servers are supposedly being shortchanged, into their wages, which in turn factors into the food prices. they make the same amount of money, and if they perform poorly, you bitch to their boss like any regular business. |

I hate tipping.
It's my money and I feel that most people in the industry don't deserve my money. I'm an accountant, where is my bonus/tip when I save you 200 on your tax return? I get nothing, the most I have gotten is a coffee and light lunch. If your job is to remember my order, and you choose to not write it down then come back saying 'did you ask for a water?' then what kind of job are you doing? I hate when I want a refill or extra this or that and you walk by me like 10 times and don't even look at me. It takes me yelling at you to get you to notice me. I tip when the food is good, when the service is fast and friendly and when you get my order right. |

As far as amount, I based that on the level/quality of service I've received, how good the food was (if it's at a restaurant), etc. It can range in amount or percentage depending on these things. For us guys, sometimes that amount can also increase further depending on how hot the waitress is. :p |

i tip like a canadian here in the uk and get laughed at endlessly. locals never tip on drinks here, rarely on haircuts, 5% - 10% for meals, and change to the next pound on cabs. things are already so expensive pre-tip-- it feels a bit silly tacking on 10 - 15% to things like a $90 men's haircut

it just works out that way sometimes.... you don't wanna ask for like a loonie or a toonie back sometimes so it works out to more than 25% |

Once upon a time I was really hammered and tipped my favourite hot cactus server 120%...my bill was only $30 to begin with but STILL. Man was I drunk that night! I've never had bad service at that location since, though...and he's now a bartender which means every time I'm there he feeds me free drinks :P So I guess it WAS worth it. Annnnnyhow, back to the question at hand...I'm ALL about tipping if the service is good/great and so is the food. If the food sucks but the service was great, I'll make a point of speaking to the manager and ensuring that my tip goes 100% to my server and not the kitchen, or vice-versa. I can understand Carrie's argument, but at the same time, accountants make a good 3x+ what a server at a resaturant does. |

In some ways I can see were tipping comes from, but in some ways in ALOT of other coutries/cultures tipping is un hered of or even shamful. I mean really its one of the lamest excuses when some says they tip "oh but they dont make alot ot money". Im sorry but truthfully alot of jobs dont make alot of money... who tips the kids at mc donalds? Your supose to be paid by your emplyer, not paid by sympathy.
One example I can see someone tipping because they want extra care taken or a favour done in the service. Or the service truley was awsome (because who said they had to smile or be so helpful in there service) In alot of countries they add a service charge at the end. Therefore you dont need to tip becuase you just paid for the service you received. I know in Australia they hardly tip at all. Infact they barly even think about it. However when bar tending I made $14.50 hour weekdays and $17.25 weekends as my wage. Over the course of a week I may have made about $20 in tips (most were just the change left over from costomers) Thing is I dont really like tipping because you have too. I can see leaving the change or 10%-15% for regular service... but for some reason I still tip even if im unhappy with the service? Although sometimes ill get such great service ill want to tip ppl who dont even have tip jars... like imagine if you tiped your car machanic |

personally. i always tip. it's part of our society, so don't be a bitch and cop out with the whole "they don't do that in europe" shit.
depending on the establishment and service my tip obviously varies. but for normal/adequate service it's 15% for me. basically the only time i leave a shit tip is when i get treated like shit. and i always have to say this at every msg board with a tipping thread. if you can afford to go out, you can afford to tip AND if we didn't tip do you really think a) people would serve you for $8/hr? b) do you think restaurants could keep their prices at a reasonable rate paying servers a decent wage? *oh yea, if you think your service sucked, and don't wanna leave a tip, instead of just being a cheap dick, why don't you speak to the server or manager? ya know, maybe SOLVE the problem, instead of passing on the buck so the next customer gets shit service too. |

im against tipping..... screw it... They have a job from which they are paid a given rate that is discussed before employment begins... If they had a problem with the rate then why would they work the job.. Another thing is.. i dont get tips for doing my job... I work, i get paid according to what was agreed upon.. i do always tip... not always the reccomened amout. If the service is great and the waiter or waitress is funny and leaves a last impression on me then i will tip better..... But like i said i dont get tipped. and i work in a dangerous workplace.. I have a higher chance of being killed at work than most of you... But i still dont get tipped...
one more thing... i bust my ass for my money so i am entitled to every freakin cent... Im not just gonna hand it away because alot of other choose to do it |

Yah I have always had questions about tipping. my cousin got into a really heated argument about it with my mom one night when we were out to dinner. My mom had just paid for a very nice dinner over a hundred bucks or so. And she went to pay 14%. the service was good but nothing memorable. But my cousin insisted that it should be 20%.
She said that it was a very hard job, and that you can't live off 8 an hour. But I mean at other min wage jobs, there are people get shit on all day by people, and get nothing extra for it. And when I talk to people that have worked in a resturaunt, I hear that it is the best way to make fast cash. Yet I always here them getting really offended when one person doesn't tip. |
